MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team hit five home runs - four in game one - en route to a doubleheader sweep at Mansfield University on Friday afternoon. The Huskies scored in every inning in game one and cruised to a 16-4 opening-game victory but then needed freshman
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) to come through on the mound as they hung on for a 2-1 victory in game two to complete the sweep. With the victories, Bloomsburg improved to 19-7 overall and 11-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, fell to 9-18 overall and 3-11 in divisional play.
In the opener, freshman
Kyle OFier (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) belted a pair of home runs for the first multiple home run game of his collegiate career. He also drove in a career-high five runs to pace the Huskies' offense. Redshirt senior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) and redshirt junior
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) also hit home runs as the duo went back-to-back off of Mansfield starter, Luke Hils, to break a 2-2 tie in the top of the third inning.
Edgette finished by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Woelfel was 3-for-4 with three runs scored as the Huskies collected 18 hits off of four Mansfield pitchers in the opener. OFier, meanwhile, finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two home runs, and five runs batted in.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from junior
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) before the Mountaineers responded in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs off of junior starter
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven). One of those first-inning runs by Mansfield was unearned.
OFier tied the game in the top of the second with a two-out solo home run to center field and then Bloomsburg took the lead for good in the top of the third when Edgette and Woelfel hit back-to-back solo home runs with one out to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead. OFier extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run jack to right center which also scored freshman
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) who led off with a double.
Bloomsburg added two more runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI single from Newbert and a run-scoring double from sophomore
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) to balloon the advantage to 8-2. The lead escalated to 11-2 in the top of the sixth on an RBI bunt single from sophomore
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and a sacrifice fly from Newbert. The third run of the frame scored when Krizan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Five more runs crossed the plate for the Huskies in the top of the seventh as the lead grew to 16-2. Newbert drove in the first run with a bases-loaded walk and then OFier doubled home a pair of runs to build the advantage to 14-2. Krizan singled to plate the Huskies' fourth run of the inning and then junior
Joey Wrabel (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) came through with a pinch-hit RBI single for the Huskies' final run of the inning, and of the game.
Mansfield scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh but the damage had already been done.
Raines pitched six strong innings to improve to 6-0 on the season. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six. He did not walk a batter and threw 66 of his 95 pitches for strikes. Redshirt sophomore
Mark Bobko (Metuchen, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) pitched the seventh and allowed two runs on three hits but did strike out a pair. Hils suffered the loss for Mansfield as he fell to 2-4 on the season. He allowed eight runs on ten hits in four and one-third innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Newbert and Krizan each had two hits to join Edgette, Woelfel, and OFier with multiple hits. Newbert and Krizan also drove in three runs each to aid the offense.
Game two was a far cry from the opener as Stoner and Mansfield's Hunter DePrimo were locked in a pitcher's duel.
Bloomsburg, in fact, did not record its first hit until junior
Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) singled to lead off the top of the third inning. The Huskies had one hit through three innings but struck for both of their runs in the top of the fourth. Edgette led off the frame with a solo home run to left center - his second round tripper of the afternoon - to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Woelfel followed with a double, advanced to third on a single by Shiffer, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury).
Stoner, who allowed two hits through the first three innings, also ran into trouble in the fourth as the Mountaineers scored their only run of the game on an RBI double from Dio Infante.
Bloomsburg had just one hit the rest of the way - a one-out double from Cooperman in the top of the seventh. But, Stoner was perfect over the final three innings, including a pair of strikeouts in the seventh, to seal the Huskies' victory.
Stoner improved to 4-0 on the season and lowered his season ERA to 1.98 in his first collegiate complete game. He allowed a run on five hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out three. He needed only 86 pitches - 63 of which were thrown for strikes. DePrimo suffered the hard-luck loss for Mansfield as he allowed only two runs on five hits in a complete-game effort. He did not walk a batter and struck out eight, needing only 81 pitches through seven innings (54 strikes).
The Huskies had five hits in game two - one each from Edgette, Woelfel, Shiffer, Cooperman, and Hooker.
Edgette finished the day going 5-for-7 with four runs scored, two home runs, and two runs batted in. Woelfel had four hits in seven trips on the afternoon while OFier did all of his damage in game one.
The two teams will conclude the weekend series on Saturday afternoon, April 14, at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
