Baseball Swept At Lock Haven Friday Afternoon

GAME 1 HTML BOX SCORE | GAME 2 HTML BOX SCORE

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - For just the second time this season, the Bloomsburg University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader as the Huskies suffered a pair of losses at Lock Haven University on Friday afternoon. The Bald Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth in game one to post a come-from-behind, 9-8, victory in the opener and then pounced early in game two and held on for a 9-3 victory over the Huskies in the nightcap. With the losses, Bloomsburg dropped to 23-9 overall and 13-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while Lock Haven improved to 20-11 overall and 10-8 in divisional play.

Despite the losses, the Huskies still maintain a one-game lead on second-place West Chester in the division standings.

In the opener, the Bald Eagles jumped on junior Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, on a two-run home run by Keyshawn D'Orso, to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies answered in the top of the second, against Lock Haven starter Jesse Slinger, with a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. Junior Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) and sophomore Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) ripped back-to-back two-out RBI doubles to provide the offense in the frame.

Bloomsburg took the lead in the top of the third when sophomore Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) singled back up the middle to drive home freshman Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) who had reached on a one-out double.

But, Raines ran into trouble again in the bottom of the third as Lock Haven scored three times on five hits and two Huskies' errors to take a 5-3 advantage. D'Orso, Ethan Moore, and Brady Chappell each had an RBI in the inning. But, the Huskies scored four times in the top of the fourth to take a 7-5 advantage. Hooker walked and then advanced to third on a double by Krizan. Sophomore Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) singled back up the middle to plate Hooker which brought the Huskies to within 5-4. Redshirt senior Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) singled to drive home Krizan and, coupled with a Lock Haven error, Swiger came all the way around to score from first as the Huskies took a 6-5 lead. Newbert followed with a run-scoring single that plated Edgette for a 7-5 advantage.

Cayden Stover belted a one-out solo home run to left center to pull the Bald Eagles to within 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth but Bloomsburg got the run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Swiger. Krizan, who was 3-for-3 in game one, reached on a two-out single and then came all the way around to score on the double.

The Huskies held an 8-6 lead until the bottom of the sixth when Lock Haven scored three times against two pitchers - senior Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) and junior Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) - to take a 9-8 lead. The final two runs of the inning came with two outs.

Lock Haven's Breton LaRose slammed the door in the top of the seventh, retiring the Huskies in order, to preserve the win. It was his sixth save of the season.

Raines labored through five innings as he allowed six runs (five earned) on ten hits. He walked three and struck out seven. Warren allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth while Hinkle gave up the final run of the inning to get saddled with the loss. He dropped to 2-1 on the year. Slinger went six innings for Lock Haven and improved to 4-3 on the season. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits, walked two, and struck out six.

Lock Haven out-hit Bloomsburg, 15-12, in the opener. Krizan led the Huskies by going 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Swiger, Edgette, and Newbert each had two hits apiece. Stover, Nick Stotler, and Kolby Dehaas each had three hits for the Bald Eagles.

The hosts wasted little time carrying the momentum into game two as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead after two innings.

Freshman Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) suffered the worst outing of his rookie season as he lasted just one-third of an inning and was charged with four runs on three hits and a hit batsman as Lock Haven scored five times in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead. The Bald Eagles scored three more in the second off of sophomore reliever Ed Herbener (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) to extend the advantage to 8-0.

Bloomsburg mounted a rally in the top of the third, against Lock Haven starter Scott Leitholf, getting a pair of runs to cut the lead to 8-2. However, Leitholf did a fine job of limiting the damage after the Huskies loaded the bases on consecutive singles from freshman Kyle OFier (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area), Hooker, and Krizan to start the inning. Swiger plated the first run on a sacrifice fly and then Edgette drove home the second run of the inning with an RBI single. However, Leitholf retired Newbert and junior Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) to end the inning with no further damage done.

The Bald Eagles got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Moore to extend the lead to 9-2. Bloomsburg threatened again in the seventh after getting back-to-back doubles from Hooker and Krizan to cut the deficit to 9-3. Swiger was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out, but Leitholf got out of the jam by retiring Edgette, Newbert, and Shiffer to finish off the complete game.

Leitholf improved to 6-1 on the season after allowing three runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Stoner suffered his first collegiate loss as he fell to 4-1 on the year. Herbener allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits in three and two-thirds innings. Redshirt junior Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) and junior Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) each pitched a scoreless inning with Zezza striking out one.

Edgette, Hooker, and Krizan each had two hits to account for six of the Huskies' eight hits in game two. Dehaas and Liam McArthur each had three of Lock Haven's 13 hits in the nightcap.

Bloomsburg will look to even the series on Saturday, April 21, when the teams reconvene at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
