BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) reached on an infield single to drive home redshirt freshman
Christian Ciotti (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) with one out in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bloomsburg University baseball team to a walk-off, 11-10, victory over 11th-ranked Le Moyne College in game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field. The Dolphins earned a split in game two with a 9-2 victory over the Huskies. Bloomsburg moved to 26-10 overall while Le Moyne moved to 28-10-1 on the season.
Trailing 10-9 heading to the bottom of the seventh of game one, freshman
Kyle OFier (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) started the rally with a leadoff walk against Le Moyne closer, Cody Barnes. Freshman
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) pinch-ran for OFier and advanced to second when junior
Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) was hit by an 0-2 pitch. Hooker was lifted for Ciotti and both he and Reed advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township). Reed tied the game at 10-10 when he scampered home after Barnes threw a wild pitch on the first offering to Swiger. Then, three pitches later, Swiger hit a chopper down the third-base line that scored Ciotti from third to give the Huskies the game-one victory.
Swiger's hit made junior
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) a winner for the fourth time this season as the righthander pitched a perfect top-half of the seventh on just ten pitches. Hinkle improved to 4-1 on the season. Barnes, meanwhile, dropped to 3-2 on the year for the Dolphins after getting saddled with the loss.
Le Moyne scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning against sophomore
Ed Herbener (Freeland, Pa./MMI Preparatory School) who was making his first collegiate start. But, the Huskies responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half against Le Moyne starter, Max Tessitore, to tie the game at 2-2. Swiger led off with a double to right center and advanced to third on an infield single from redshirt senior
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who extended his hitting streak to 17 straight games. The duo then completed a perfect double steal that allowed Swiger to cross the plate for Bloomsburg's first run. After junior
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) walked, Edgette stole third and then came into score on a sacrifice fly from freshman
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) to knot the score at 2-2.
Herbener pitched around a two-out walk in the second and then the Huskies went back to work, scoring six times on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to take an 8-2 lead. Krizan walked and then advanced to third on Swiger's second double in as many innings. Edgette plated both Krizan and Swiger with a single through the right side of the infield to give the Huskies a 4-2 advantage. Shiffer followed with a single and then he and Edgette pulled off another double steal as they advanced to second and third. Newbert walked to load the bases which ended Tessitore's afternoon. Nathan Carroll came on in relief and was greeted rudely by sophomore
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) who belted the tenth pitch of the at bat over the right field fence for a grand slam home run to give Bloomsburg its six-run cushion. It was Holmes' fourth home run of the season and second in as many games.
Bloomsburg tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to take a 9-2 lead as Edgette led off the inning with a triple to right center field and then scored on an RBI groundout by Shiffer.
Sophomore
Brett Alaimo (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) came on in relief of Herbener in the top of the fourth and, after registering the first two outs of the inning, plunked Michael Smith with a pitch and then gave up an RBI double to Brian Cox as the Dolphins cut the Bloomsburg lead to 9-3.
The roof caved in for the Huskies in the top of the fifth as Le Moyne scored seven times against junior
Jeremy Zezza (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) and senior
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) to take a 10-9 lead. The Dolphins had five hits and took advantage of a pair of walks and a pair of Bloomsburg errors during the seven-run frame.
Herbener allowed two runs on five hits in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out one. Junior
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) pitched a perfect sixth inning, striking out one, while Hinkle pitched a perfect seventh. Tessitore pitched one inning and was charged with seven runs on five hits and four walks. Carroll, after allowing the grand slam to Holmes, kept the Huskies at bay and allowed two runs on three hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Swiger and Edgette each had three of the Huskies nine hits in the opener. Edgette also led the Huskies with three runs scored and three stolen bases in the victory.
Le Moyne jumped on redshirt sophomore starter
Mark Bobko (Metuchen, N.J./St. Joseph Metuchen) in game two as the visitors stormed out to a 9-0 lead after two innings. The Dolphins scored four times in the top of the first against Bobko and then added five runs on three hits in the second against both Bobko and redshirt sophomore reliever
James Reardon IV (Springfield, Pa./Springfield). The Huskies' bullpen was sensational after the second inning as Le Moyne could manage only one hit over the final five innings. But, unfortunately for the Huskies, Bloomsburg could not solve Le Moyne starter Joe Vail as the southpaw allowed only three hits in the complete-game victory.
Bloomsburg scored its first run in the bottom of the third when OFier belted a leadoff home run to left center to cut the lead to 9-1. The home run was OFier's sixth of the season which gives him sole possession of the team lead in that department. The Huskies scored their other run in the bottom of the fifth when OFier reached on a one-out single, advanced to third on a double by Hooker, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Krizan.
Bobko dropped to 0-2 on the season as he could not get out of the second inning. Reardon, after a shaky start, settled down and pitched well. He was charged with two runs on three hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. Redshirt junior
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) pitched around a two-out walk in the fifth and struck out two while senior
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County) pitched the sixth and seventh innings and had two runners reach base - one walk and one error.
Vail improved to 3-2 on the season after allowing two runs on three hits. He walked four and struck out five. OFier had two of the Huskies' three hits and scored both Bloomsburg runs in the loss.
