INDIANA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team split its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division doubleheader with Indiana (Pa.) (IUP) on Friday (Apr. 27), winning game one 10-4 and falling in game two 9-7.
The Huskies took an early lead with two runs in the first and three runs in the second to build a 5-0 lead, beginning with
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) leading off with a double. With one out,
Emily Mayhew (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) reached on a ball that got by the shortstop that allowed Winkelman to score unearned. Back-to-back walks by
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) loaded the bases with one out, before
Bridget Casey (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) would draw a two-out walk to bring Mayhew home for the second run. In the third, it was another double from Winkelman followed by a double from
Maggie Hall (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) that plated the third run, before Wheeland belted her ninth homer of the season to score Hall and put the Huskies up 5-0. After a scoreless third, IUP would get on the board in the fourth with two runs to make it 5-2. Both runs came on a two-out, two-RBI double from Lauren Goetz that scored Amanda Parrish and Renee Wall. The fifth inning went scoreless, before IUP would score two more runs to make it 5-4 in the sixth. Goetz singled home Parrish, before a wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases for Alaina Montgomery. Montgomery drew a walk to bring across another run, before
Alyssa Davies (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) was able to strand the bases full with a strikeout. The Huskies would pad their lead with four runs in the seventh, beginning with Shelhamer's second homer of the season, before a double by
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte), a walk from Casey and an infield single by Davies put runners on the corners with one out. Winkelman continued her hot day at the plate with a base knock to right field to bring home Baney and Casey to stretch the Huskies lead to 8-4. Davies would come in to score from third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hall, before Hall would come around to score on a double from Mayhew. Davies got the Crimson Hawks to go three up three down in the seventh to get the win.
The Huskies scored 10 runs on 13 hits while not committing an error. Winkelman boasted a game-high five hits, while Hall tallied two hits and six other Huskies recorded one hit each. Winkelman, Hall and Wheeland each drove in two runs while Mayhew, Shelhamer and Casey each brought home one run. Winkelman and Hall each scored twice, while six others crossed the plate once. Davies (7-7) earned the win in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. The redshirt junior walked one and struck out six. Baney tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits along with issuing two walks and punching out two.
The Crimson Hawks would get the scoring started with two runs in the second, starting with Montgomery singling up the middle and stealing second. She would score on a double by Kaitlyn Beers, before a two-out double from Parrish scored Beers. IUP padded its lead with six runs in the third, with the first two coming on a two-RBI single from Beers that scored Kassie Kesneck and Alaina Laverick. Wall would bring home Montgomery on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, before Bryanna Lonick doubled home Parrish and Beers. Goetz would single later in the inning to move Lonick to third, before Lonick scored unearned on a Huskies error. BU would get on the board with two runs in the top of the third, coming on back-to-back jacks by Hall and Mayhew. After a scoreless fourth, the Huskies would plate three runs in the top of the inning to make it an 8-5 game. Hall drew a one-out walk, before Mayhew singled through the left side. After the second out was recorded, Shelhamer roped a double to center field to score both Hall and Mayhew. Casey kept the inning alive and moved Shelhamer to third with a single to short, before Baney drove her in with a single to center field. IUP would plate one run in the bottom of the fifth, when Beers doubled home Montgomery after Montgomery reached on an infield single. The Huskies plated two more runs in the top of the sixth, starting with a two-out single down the right field line from Hall. Mayhew moved Hall to third with a single to center field, before Wheeland drew a walk to load the bases. It was Shelhamer who came through with her second double of the game to score Hall and Mayhew. That is all the Huskies would get, as IUP held on for the sweep.
The Huskies pounded out seven runs on 13 hits while committing one error in the game. Mayhew paced the offense with a 4-4 day, while Hall notched three hits and Shelhamer and Baney each had two. Casey and
Ashli Venokur (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) also each had one hit in the game. Shelhamer drove in a game-high four runs, while three other Huskies each brought home one run. Hall and Mayhew each scored three times, with Shelhamer also scoring once.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) (3-4) took the loss in the circle allowing two runs on three hits in one inning. The freshman also issued one free pass and struck out one in the start.
Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) faced three batters in the second in relief of Wild, allowing three runs on two hits with one walk. Davies fired five innings of relief in which she gave up four runs, three earned on eight hits. She did not surrender a walk and struck out three in the effort.
The split moves the Huskies to 17-20 overall and 9-9 in the PSAC Central, while IUP is now 19-14 overall and 11-7 in the division.
The Huskies will wrap up the regular season on Sunday (Apr. 29) when they travel to Clarion for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
