ERIE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team saw their season come to an end with a 16-7 loss in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament quarterfinal at the hands of No. 21 Mercyhurst on Tuesday (May 1).
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the game in the first five minutes, with Cassandra Ellis beginning the scoring from Lacey Netti less than three minutes in. 42 seconds later, Taylor Izzo scored from Kristin Anderson to put Mercyhurst up 2-0. Approaching the five-minute mark of the first half, Emma Hubert scored unassisted to make it 3-0 Lakers. Bloomsburg would respond by scoring the next two goals less than two minutes apart, starting with
Megan Smith (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Township) scoring from
Lindsey Coyle (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) six minutes in. Approaching the eight-minute mark,
Tracy Rusen (Martinsville, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored from
Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) to make it 3-2. As the clock passed the first 10 minutes, Mercyhurst would strike two more times to put their lead at 5-2. Izzo scored from Netti with 17:57 left in the first half before scoring again from Anderson just 27 seconds later. The clock would tick down into the final 10 minutes before
Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) would get on the board with a goal (6:54) to get the Huskies within 5-3. Grace Lawson scored less than a minute later from Netti to get the Lakers back up by three, before Molly Megan scored unassisted with less than two minutes left to put the home team up 7-3. Rusen scored her second of the afternoon unassisted with just 29 seconds left in the half to send the game to the locker room with No. 21 Mercyhurst leading 7-4.
The Lakers scored the first three goals of the second half over four minutes and change, beginning with Torie Sullivan scoring from Izzo just under five minutes in. Hubert scored from Netti just 45 seconds later, before Anderson scored just shy of nine minutes in to stretch the lead to 10-4.
Taylor Turner (Corning, N.Y./Corning West) would score to cut the deficit to five goals with 17:43 to play in the game, before Mercyhurst went on a run to put the game away. The Lakers scored the next six goals over an 11-minute period. Izzo scored unassisted with 15:25 to play in the game, before scoring again nine seconds later from Angelina Simon. Sullivan would score unassisted with 12 minutes to play to make it 13-5, Izzo scored from Lawson to make it 14-5 with 9:47 to play. Lawson would score just 27 seconds later from Izzo to put the Lakers up by 10. Olivia Africa scored with under five minutes to play, before Bloomsburg would score the final two goals of the game in the last four minutes. Kelleher scored unassisted with 3:30 left in the game, before Turner scored with 1:52 left in the game.
Both teams put 25 shots on goal, with Mercyhurst edging Bloomsburg 19-18 in shots on goal. Turner, Rusen and Kelleher each scored twice while Smith also tallied one goal. Wozniak and Coyle helped on Bloomsburg goals in the game. Bloomsburg won the battle for ground balls 23-18, led by four each from Rusen and
Delaney Schappert (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor).
Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) collected three, along with three others picking up two and another six Huskies each recording one. The Huskies caused 14 of Mercyhurst's 30 turnovers, led by three from
Abby Nocito (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape). Three Huskies each forced two turnovers, while another five players each caused one in the game. Bloomsburg won nine draw controls in the game with four Huskies each registering two and
Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) winning one. DiPasquale (10-8) made three saves in the loss.
The Huskies finish the season with a 10-8 record; while No. 21 Mercyhurst moves on to take on No. 14 East Stroudsburg in the semifinals.
