WEST LAWN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team saw its historic season come to an end on Sunday as the Huskies dropped a 6-4 decision to the University of Charleston for their second loss of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament at Owls Field at Ted Palka Park. Bloomsburg wraps up its season with a 31-20 overall record while the Golden Eagles advance to play their second elimination game against Millersville University later on Sunday.
The Huskies fell behind 6-1 through five innings but battled back to pull to within two when sophomore
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Loyalsock Township) led off the top of the eighth inning with his fourth home run of the season. Bloomsburg made things interesting in the top of the ninth when sophomore
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was hit by a pitch and then stole second with one out. Redshirt junior
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) followed with a walk to put runners at first and second to end the afternoon for Charleston reliever Jacob Kaiser. The Golden Eagles' Jordan Peck came on and retired freshman
Kyle OFier (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area) on a fielder's choice - which moved Swiger to third - and then junior pinch-hitter
Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) on a bouncer to first to end the game.
Bloomsburg certainly had chances against three Charleston pitchers as the Huskies left 10 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the fourth and two runners in both the sixth and ninth innings.
Sophomore
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) got the call for the Huskies on the mound and allowed an unfortunate run in the bottom of the second as the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead. Charleston's Jack Brunetti doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning and then advanced to third on heads-up baserunning after Austin Hathaway struck out on a ball in the dirt but had to be thrown out at first which allowed Brunetti to move up 90 feet. Cooperman then struck out Hayden Cartt for the second out of the inning. However, during the at bat to Brice Arrington - after three consecutive foul balls - Cooperman tried to put him away with a high fastball but the pitch went over the head of freshman catcher
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) allowing Brunetti to trot home from third for the first run of the game.
Charleston added an unearned run in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 2-0 before the Huskies came back in the top of the fourth. Austin Henrich, who started for the Golden Eagles, lost the strike zone in the fourth as he walked four Huskies with the fourth coming to Burcin with the bases loaded, cutting the lead to 2-1. But, Henrich got freshman
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) to pop up to short for the second out and then sophomore
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) lined out to first to end the inning with no further damage.
The Golden Eagles did a majority of their damage in the bottom of the fifth as they scored four runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead. Steven Davis drove home the first run on an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-1. The Golden Eagles then loaded the bases and Cooperman threw another wild pitch that allowed the second run of the inning to score. A sacrifice fly from Hathaway and an RBI single from Cartt provided the other two runs and proved to be the end of the day for Cooperman. Freshman
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) came on in relief and threw one pitch with Burcin nailing Cartt at second trying to steal.
Bloomsburg tried to respond in the sixth when freshman
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) walked and Krizan reached on a fielder's choice with one out. After a wild pitch advanced both runners to second and third, Henrich struck out Burcin and then retired Reed on a flyball to center to end the threat.
Stoner retired the Golden Eagles in order in the sixth and Bloomsburg responded with a pair of runs in the seventh. Holmes and Swiger reached on back-to-back singles and then advanced on a groundout to first off the bat of Edgette. Kaiser came on in relief on Henrich and gave up a sacrifice fly to redshirt junior
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) to cut the lead to 6-2. OFier then doubled to right to bring home Swiger, trimming the lead to 6-3, before Kaiser got Newbert to pop out to end the inning.
After Charleston, again, went quiet in the seventh against Stoner, Krizan brought the Huskies to within two with his fourth home run of the season - a 2-1 offering from Kaiser - over the left center field fence.
But, the Huskies could get no closer.
Cooperman dropped to 2-4 on the season after allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings. He walked one and struck out four. Stoner allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in two and a-third innings while junior
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) struck out a batter in a scoreless eighth inning. Henrich, meanwhile, improved to 6-3 on the year after allowing three runs on four hits in six and one-third innings. He walked six and struck out two. Kaiser kept the lead intact and Peck earned his fourth save of the season by keeping the Huskies off the scoreboard in the ninth.
Charleston out-hit Bloomsburg, 10-6. Colby Johnson paced the Golden Eagles with a 3-for-3 performance at the place. He also had a pair of stolen bases. Six different Huskies had hits in the loss, including Woelfel. His first-inning single with two outs was the 100th hit of his collegiate career.
Bloomsburg ends its historic season with a 31-20 overall record. Picked to miss the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament according to the preseason coaches poll, the Huskies not only made the conference tournament but advanced to the NCAA regional playoffs for just the second time in program history with the first trip occurring back in 1995. The Huskies' 13-7 victory over Slippery Rock on May 9 was the program's first conference tournament victory since a 5-3 decision over Shippensburg on May 13, 2011.
The 31 victories marked the most under head coach
Mike Collins' tutelage - which has now spanned a total of 12 seasons - surpassing the 28 wins his Huskies posted in 2014. The 31 wins this season are also the second-most in program history trailing only the 1995 team that won 37 games and the North Atlantic Regional Championship.
Four seniors were honored at a special graduation ceremony last Monday -
Austin Edgette (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East),
Shane Woelfel (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah),
Mike Warren (Garnerville, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional), and
Zach Meyer (Muncy Valley, Pa./Sullivan County). Edgette became the school's all-time career hits leader with a two-out double in the bottom of the eighth inning against Mercyhurst on May 17. It was his 236th career hit, surpassing Bloomsburg Hall of Famer John Stillo's previous mark of 235 set from 1995 to 1998.
