BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team suffered its fourth consecutive loss on Saturday afternoon as it dropped a 2-0 decision against visiting Gannon University at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while the Golden Knights improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The visitors got their first goal of the game just 7:10 into the contest when a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity. Sam Thornton took the penalty kick and beat sophomore goalkeeper
Brock Gould (York, Pa./Red Lion), who guessed right, but couldn't get his hand on the well-placed shot as Gannon took a 1-0 advantage. It was Thornton's third goal of the season. That would be the only goal of the opening half that saw Gannon hold a 9-3 advantage in shot attempts and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Gould, who was making his first start of the season, kept the Huskies in the game with three first-half saves.
It would remain a 1-0 Golden Knight lead until Thornton struck again in the 64th minute to extend the lead to 2-0. Eduardo de Bonis Encinoso and Baran Kilic picked up the assists.
Bloomsburg had a chance to cut the lead in half with just over five minutes remaining when the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick. However, Gannon goalkeeper Hedi Mehnaoui stopped junior
Mike Bazadona III (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) to keep Bloomsburg off the scoreboard.
Gould stopped seven Gannon shots in his first start of the season while Mehnaoui turned aside three Bloomsburg shots to improve to 2-3 on the season. The Golden Knights outshot the Huskies, 18-11, in the contest and held a significant 13-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.
The Huskies will be on the road next Friday, September 21, when they take on the Lakers of Mercyhurst University in Erie. Bloomsburg returns home on Sunday, September 23 to battle West Chester University. Start time from Steph Pettit Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
