HTML BOX SCORE vs ADELPHI

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team was swept in consecutive matches to close out the final day of competition at the Walsh University Tournament on Saturday. The Huskies fell to the host Cavaliers in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 29-27, and then fell to Adelphi University by three identical scores of 25-20 in the team's final match of the weekend. Bloomsburg concluded the program's first weekend of action with a 1-3 record.

Redshirt senior Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) and freshman Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts during the weekend. Over the course of the four matches, Gomish led the Huskies with 42 kills while finishing third with 31 digs. She hit a team-high .211 over the weekend. Buell, meanwhile, had 29 kills, five aces, 18 digs, and two block assists.

In the opening set against Walsh, the Cavaliers went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead and never looked back en route to a 25-17 victory in the opener. The Huskies bounced back and led for a majority of the time in the second set, building up a four-point lead on four different occasions. Bloomsburg led 16-12 before the Cavaliers rattled off four consecutive points to tie the set at 16-16. Freshman Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) stopped the bleeding with a kill to give the Huskies a 17-16 advantage before Walsh scored three straight to take its first lead of the set at 19-17. The teams traded points the rest of the way with the Cavaliers holding on for a 25-23 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was again tightly contested with Walsh jumping out to a 5-1 lead before a kill by freshman Alora Conrad (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and two by Mooney cut the lead to 5-4. The Cavaliers went on another mini run and built up a six-point lead at 16-10 before the Huskies rallied. A Walsh service error followed by kills from Mooney and Gomish cut the lead to 16-13. The hosts would again pull away, extending the lead to 20-15 only to see Bloomsburg keep fighting. Buell brought the Huskies back as she posted two kills, two aces, and a block assist during a 7-2 spurt that tied the set at 22-22. Walsh scored twice before the Huskies tied it again at 24-24 on a kill from freshman Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and an ace from Mooney. After a service error put Walsh back in front by one, Gomish connected on back-to-back kills to give the Huskies set point at 26-25. The Cavaliers thwarted the victory with two consecutive points but could not put the set away after an error which tied the set at 27-27. However, Walsh finally put Bloomsburg away with two consecutive points to complete the sweep with a 29-27 win in the third.

Gomish led the Huskies with 11 kills and eight digs while Mooney chipped in with 10 kills and six digs. Both accounted for a team-high 11 points in the match. Freshman Emma Van Arsdale (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was again tops in assists with 29 while sophomore Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) led the way with a match-high 18 digs. Hallie Schroeder led Walsh with 16 kills while Lauren Loucks added 13.

Against Adelphi, the Huskies had to play catch up for a majority of the match and the Panthers posted three consecutive 25-20 victories to complete the sweep. In the opening set, Adelphi jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Huskies rattled off four straight points to tie the set at 6-6. Van Arsdale, Buell, and Gomish had kills during the run. Adelphi, however, scored the next four points to take a 10-6 lead and the Huskies could not recover.

In the second set, runs by both teams saw the Huskies take an 11-10 lead near the midway mark. Adelphi jumped out to a 10-5 lead only to see Bloomsburg score the next six points - two on aces by Mooney and kills from Buell, Gomish, and Mooney. But, the Panthers quietly took the lead and pulled away late to post their second consecutive five-point victory. Bloomsburg, again, kept the third set close early before Adelphi pulled away late. Gomish led the way with four kills during the set while Buell and freshman Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) had three kills each.

Gomish again paced the Huskies with 11 kills while adding seven digs in a losing effort. She was the only Huskies' player to record double-digit kills in the match. Mooney had seven kills and nine digs while Buell had six kills. Freshman Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) led with 16 assists while Cianciulli posted a team-high 15 digs. Sara Bisbe led the Panthers with 14 kills and 10 digs.

Bloomsburg will make history, again, on Tuesday, September 4, as it will play the program's first home match against Chestnut Hill. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Nelson Field House. The match, sponsored by Wagner's Trophies, will feature t-shirt and mini volleyball giveaways as well as a post-match autograph session with the members of the inaugural team.
