KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University football team suffered its worst loss in six years on Saturday night as it dropped a 44-10 decision at Kutztown University in front of nearly 6,700 fans on Family Day at Andre Reed Stadium. The setback was the Huskies' third straight to the Golden Bears in the series and it dropped Bloomsburg to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. Kutztown, meanwhile, improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in divisional play.
Bloomsburg's last loss by at least 34 points came at Shippensburg in the opening round of the 2012 NCAA Division II playoffs when the Huskies suffered a 58-20 loss to the Red Raiders on November 17, 2012. It was the third consecutive setback to Kutztown in the all-time series - the first time Bloomsburg has lost three straight meetings against its rivals since the 1979-81 seasons.
The Huskies mustered only 196 yards of total offense which included just 73 yards on the ground - just the seventh time in 63 career games under head coach
Paul Darragh that Bloomsburg did not reach the century mark in a game. Part of the issue was that the Kutztown defense sacked redshirt sophomore quarterback
Erik Benjamin (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) five times for a loss of 31 yards. Meanwhile, Kutztown generated 488 yards of total offense against a Huskies' defense that came into the game ranked second in the PSAC in total defense through the first four weeks of the season.
Kutztown struck first when Craig Reynolds found paydirt from 14 yards out - his first of three rushing touchdowns on the night - with 10:23 left in the opening quarter. Alec Rosenfeld added the extra point as the Golden Bears grabbed a 7-0 advantage. The Huskies were given a gift on Kutztown's next possession when an errant snap on a punt resulted in a loss of 29 yards and put Bloomsburg in a first-and-goal situation from the Kutztown four-yard line. However, the Huskies had to settle for a 22-yard field goal from redshirt freshman
Jaco Sattamini (Delaware Water Gap, Pa./Stroudsburg) and, with 5:27 left in the first quarter, Bloomsburg cut the Kutztown lead to 7-3.
Unfortunately for Bloomsburg, the momentum took a huge swing in the favor of the Golden Bears the rest of the night.
Kutztown outscored Bloomsburg, 21-0, in the second quarter including a one-yard touchdown run by Reynolds - his third score of the half - on the final play of the first half as the Golden Bears held a 28-3 lead at intermission. The Huskies had zero yards of total offense in the first quarter and finished with 58 yards after the opening 30 minutes of action against a Kutztown defense that was 13th in the league in yards allowed per game (431.7) through its first three games.
Rosenfeld added to the lead with the only points of the third quarter - a 21-yard field goal - wit 6:07 left to extend the lead to 31-3 heading to the fourth quarter. Collin DiGalbo found Diego Torres on an 18-yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter and DiGalbo plunged into the endzone from two yards out with 6:55 left to extend the lead to 44-3 - closing out a string of 37 consecutive points scored by the Golden Bears.
Bloomsburg's only touchdown came with 1:44 left when Benjamin called his own number from a yard out, capping off a 16-play, 68-yard drive. It was Benjamin's fifth rushing touchdown of the season.
Redshirt junior
Alex Gooden (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) led the Huskies' rushing attack with 11 carries for 59 yards. Redshirt junior
Alexander Arcangeli (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added 29 yards on five carries. Benjamin finished 14-of-31 for 123 yards and hooked up with redshirt junior
Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) seven times for 66 yards on the night. Reynolds finished with 112 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries and also added two catches for 48 yards. Abdul Hassan-Neblett added 80 yards rushing on just nine totes. DiGalbo finished 14-of-18 for 195 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He left midway through the second quarter and gave way to Eric Nickel who was 9-of-11 for 81 yards and one score before DiGalbo entered the game again midway through the third quarter. Alstan Wolfe led the Golden Bears with six catches for 50 yards and also completed one pass for 12 yards.
Kutztown outgained Bloomsburg, 488-196, on the night. The Golden Bears had an edge in both rushing (200-73) and passing (288-123) while also holding the ball for more than 31 minutes - the first time the Huskies did not win the time of possession battle this season.
Defensively, senior
