BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The 23rd-ranked Bloomsburg University men's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season on Wednesday night as it dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Rams of Jefferson University. The Huskies dropped to 2-1 on the young season while the Rams earned their first win of the year to improve to 1-2 overall.
The scoring started late in the first half when a foul by Bloomsburg in the box created a penalty kick opportunity for Jefferson with just under ten minutes left in the opening stanza. Sophomore goalkeeper
Trey Orner (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) guessed right on the shot attempt from Jason Rocha but the ball found its way into the back of the net past the outstretched arm of the Huskies' netminder for a 1-0 Rams' lead. The goal snapped a scoreless streak of 215:19 by Orner and the Huskies to open the campaign.
That tally proved to be the only marker of the first half during which Jefferson outshot Bloomsburg, 8-3.
Rocha nearly made it 2-0 early in the second half as his initial shot attempt was turned aside by Orner but then got his own rebound and put a shot past the sophomore goalkeeper that was cleared out of harms way by the Huskies' defense to stay within a goal. Less than nine minutes later, in the 64th minute, sophomore
Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) was inches away from tying the match at 1-1 but his shot from well outside the box hit the far post behind Jefferson goalkeeper Andrew Menjivar and bounded away to keep the score unchanged.
The near miss appeared to take the wind out of the Huskies' sails as Jefferson scored less than six minutes later when Hunter Dyson stole the ball from Orner in the near corner and played it to Rocha who deposited a shot into an empty net for his second goal of the match and of the season. Just three minutes later, in the 73rd minute, the Rams extended the lead to 3-0 when Ian Lake beat Orner with a blast from outside the box off of a corner kick.
Shots favored Jefferson, 13-9, in the second half for a total margin of 21-12 for the contest. The Rams also held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks on the night.
Orner suffered his first loss of the season to drop to 2-1 overall. He was credited with four saves. Menjivar earned the shutout victory by turning aside three Bloomsbrug shots on goal.
Bloomsburg returns home on Sunday, September 9, when it entertains Shaw University at Steph Pettit Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
