BLOOMSBURG, PA -
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) became just the 22nd player in the history of Bloomsburg University women's basketball to score 1,000 career points, tallying a game-high 20 to lead the Huskies to an 85-82 win over visiting Seton Hill Wednesday night. With the win, Bloomsburg improves to 12-6, 8-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and remain unbeaten (9-0) at the Nelson Field House this season.
Mack reached the 1,000-point milestone midway through the second quarter when she sliced through the lane for a bucket, much to the joy of the home crowd on hand. The senior from Walnutport, Pa., is 22nd on the Bloomsburg all-time scoring list, and sixth in program history in made three-pointers (150). Mack finished with 20 points on 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc, and added five assists.
Emma Saxton's (York, Pa./Central York) torrid January continued Wednesday night, as the sophomore netted the Huskies first eight points in just 2:37 seconds. Bloomsburg would lead 10-4 thanks to a bucket from
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), but an 18-5 spurt from the Griffins would give Seton Hill a 19-13 lead late in the first quarter. Megan Marecic and Cheyenne Trest each poured in eight points for the Griffins in the run.
Tied at 29-29 with 5:56 remaining in the first half, Bloomsburg would go on a 16-6 run to take a 45-35 lead into the locker room at the half. Saxton led the way for the Huskies with 14 first-half points, who outscored Seton Hill 23-11 in the second quarter as a team.
The third quarter would belong to the Griffins, however. A 14-4 Seton Hill run would once again tie the contest at 49-49 just 4:02 into the third quarter, thanks to four points from Trest and another three-pointer from Marecic. A layup from
Megan Brandt (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) late in the quarter would give Bloomsburg a 62-60 lead after three periods, but the Huskies were unable to pull away for the remainder of the game.
A back-and-forth start to the final quarter saw Seton Hill take a one-point lead with just 2:50 remaining on a basket from Nolan, but Bloomsburg would answer with consecutive buckets from Montana and
Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) to give the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish. A desperation three from Trest and a bucket from Nolan in the game's waning seconds would trim the Bloomsburg lead to just one, but the Huskies would go a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe in the game's final minute to fend off the Seton Hall rally. Fittingly, it was back-to-back pairs of free throws from Mack that would salt away the win for Bloomsburg.
Saxton stuffed the stat sheet once again for the Huskies, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, nine rebounds, and six assists. The sophomore is averaging a team-high 19.2 points per game over her last five games, and has posted double figures in each of her last 10 games. Montana chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Brandt added 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Huskies shot 50.0% (34-of-68) from the floor as a team, and 37.5% (6-of-16) from three-point territory. The Griffins struggled to find twine all evening, shooting 36.5% (27-of-74) from the field and 34.5% (10-of-29) from behind the arc. The teams were an even 40-40 in the rebounding column, but Bloomsburg outscored Seton Hill 42-32 in the paint.
Marecic paced the Griffins with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Nolan posted 17 points and nine boards. Trest finished with 16 points, and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, and Tiana Stewart added 10 points.
Bloomsburg will hit the road this weekend to take on Mansfield Saturday afternoon. The Huskies will then travel to Shippensburg next Wednesday, January 30, before returning home on Saturday, February 2, to host West Chester. Tip-off in this Saturday's contest with the Mountaineers is set for 1:00 p.m.
