MILLERSIVLLE, Pa. - Junior Christina Podpora (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) provided the game-winning goal with her first tally of the season for the #21st-ranked Bloomsburg women's soccer team as it won its eighth-straight game and second-straight over a ranked opponent. The Huskies defeated #6 Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Divisional showdown, Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg improved to 10-1 on the year and 8-1 in the PSAC East while Millersville suffered its first loss of the year, falling to 10-1 and 8-1 in the PSAC East. Â
Leading 1-0 midway through the second half, the Huskies were awarded a corner kick at the 68:50 mark. Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) took the corner for Bloomsburg and sent the ball into the box for Maggie McDonald (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) who one-timed it in Podpora's direction. Podpora buried the shot to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead with 21:10 to play in regulation. Â
The goal proved to be the game-winner as Millersville got on the board with less than three minutes to play to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was the first tally allowed by the Huskie defense in the last 360 minutes of action over the last four games, including today. In fact, both goals allowed came in the final 2:15 of regulation. The last goal scored on the Huskies defense was by East Stroudsburg at the 87:45 mark on September 25, 2019. Â
Millersville got the final shot of the game off with just 21 seconds to play but the Huskie defense blocked the attempt and the score held 2-1 at the final horn in favor of Bloomsburg. Â
Hoelke started the scoring in the 23rd minute as she buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season thanks to an assist by Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) to give Bloomsburg the 1-0 lead. Â
After the Bloomsburg goal, the Marauders got their first shot of the game off in the 26th minute but Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) picked up her first save of the game to keep Millersville off the board. Four corner kicks for the Marauders were cleared out without damage while their one other shot on goal in the first half was stopped by Hawkins as Bloomsburg carried the 1-0 lead into halftime. Â
The Huskie defense continued its tenacious play as they did not allow Millersville to get a clean shot off in the second half until the 76th minute. The shot was without consequence, however, as Hawkins made her third save of the game. Â
Millersville held a 13-7 advantage in shots while both teams were able to put just four shots on target. The Marauders also held the 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. Â
Hawkins finished the day with three saves in the win for the Huskies to improve to 10-1 on the year while her Millersville counterpart, Reagan Kolinski, made two saves in the loss and fell to 10-1 on the season. Â
Bloomsburg and Millersville are now tied for the top spot in the PSAC East standings. Â
The Huskies return home this week as they host Shippensburg on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium in a PSAC East contest. The Raiders come into Wednesday's contest seventh in PSAC East standings with a 5-6 overall record and a 3-6 slate in conference play. Â
