#9 Women's Soccer Blanks Mansfield 5-0 on Saturday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team extended its season winning streak to 10 games as the Huskies blanked visiting Mansfield, 5-0, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 12-1 on the year and 10-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletics Conference (PSAC) East Division while the Mountaineers dropped to 1-11 for the season and 1-9 in conference play.

The Huskies posted their highest goal and assist totals of the season with five goals and five assists against the Mountaineers. In Bloomsburg's current 10-game winning streak, the Huskies have outscored opponents 29-4 while posting six shutouts in that span.

Senior Maggie Callan got the scoring started with her second goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Junior Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) crossed the ball into the box for sophomore Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) who one-timed it to Callan. Callan was then able to get a toe on the ball and push it past the Mansfield goalie. Sophomore Paige Harris (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) scored her first career goal at Bloomsburg as she headed home a corner from junior Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to give BU a 2-0 lead in the 25th minute.

Hoelke pushed the Huskies lead to 3-0 just past the midway point of the first half as she buried a penalty kick for her seventh goal of the season in the 28th minute.

The Bloomsburg defense was impenetrable in the first half as they did not allow a single Mountaineer shot nor did Mansfield have a corner kick in the first 45 minutes.

Harris got on the board for the second time in the game, again off a corner kick, but this time she was able to head home a Hoelke corner for the 4-0 Bloomsburg lead in the 54th minute.

Mansfield got its first shot of the game off in the 67th minute but the new Bloomsburg keeper, freshman Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was there to stop the shot and pick up her second save of the season. After a Bloomsburg foul, Mansfield's free kick was on target but once again, Spingler made the stop to preserve the shutout.

Freshman Abby Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) joined the scoring party as she took a cross in the box from junior Christina Podpora (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) and buried the ball into the open net in front of her to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead with her first career goal at BU.

Groff is the 13th Huskie to score a goal for Bloomsburg this year.

Redshirt junior Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) started in net for the Huskies and did not need to record a save in her 53:13 of scoreless action for her 12th win of the year. Spingler came in the second half and recorded both of the Huskies saves in her 36:47.

Bloomsburg out-shot Mansfield 41-3 in the contest and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Huskies will hit the road for a pair of road games as Bloomsburg travels to Shepherd University for a 1:00 p.m. PSAC East showdown on Wednesday, October 23 before traveling to Lock Haven for a 2:30 p.m. contest on Saturday, October 26.
