Men's Soccer Battles But Falls Short At #4 Gannon Wednesday Afternoon

ERIE, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team gave fourth-ranked Gannon University everything it could handle on Wednesday afternoon but a slow start by the Huskies proved costly as the Golden Knights held on for a 3-1 victory at McConnell Family Stadium in a non-conference matchup. Bloomsburg dropped to 3-5 overall while Gannon remained unbeaten as it improved to 6-0 on the season.

The Golden Knights raced out to a 3-0 lead at halftime as Alex Lee Yaw scored all three first-half goals for Gannon - his second, third, and fourth markers of the season. Lee Yaw started the scoring in the second minute when he beat junior goalkeeper Brock Gould (York, Pa./Red Lion) on a free kick. Gould was making his first start of the season on Wednesday afternoon. Lee Yaw notched his second of the game in the 12th minute on an assist from Lennox Crews and then completed the hat trick in the 37th minute off of a helper from Toby Gower.

But, the Huskies got on the board in the 61st minute when freshman Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) scored his first collegiate goal after heading a free kick from junior Carter Luckenbaugh (York, Pa./Central York) past Gannon goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood. It was Luckenbaugh's second assist of the year which gives him 20 for his career - one shy of Paul Yates (1996-98) for third on the school's all-time list in career helpers.

Bloomsburg, however, could get no closer despite outshooting Gannon, 10-6, in the second half and 14-13 for the contest. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon. Gould stopped four shots in his first start of the year after making 13 starts a season ago. Hallwood, meanwhile, improved to 6-0 on the campaign after turning aside three shots in the victory.

The Huskies will be back on the road on Saturday, October 5, when they head to the University of District of Columbia for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff. Bloomsburg does not return home until Wednesday, October 9, against West Chester at 7:00 p.m.
