Women's Volleyball Falls to East Stroudsburg in Straight Sets Friday Evening

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University volleyball dropped a three-set match to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central opponent, East Stroudsburg Friday evening. With the loss, the Huskies dropped to 7-17 on the year and 2-9 in the PSAC while the Warriors improved to 20-4 and 10-1 in conference play.

The Warriors won by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-16.

The Huskies tied the first set at 2-2 before East Stroudsburg took a 3-2 lead and did not surrender the advantage. Bloomsburg and the Warriors traded the next two points before East Stroudsburg pushed its lead to 6-4. The Warriors then used a six-point run to extend their lead to 12-4. A kill from sophomore Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) halted the run thanks to an assist from classmate Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury). Three-straight attacking errors by the Warriors two points later cut the lead to 12-8 but the Huskies couldn't put together more than a two-point run as the Warriors closed out the set with a 5-2 run to win 25-19.

The Warriors opened up the second set with a quick 7-1 lead but a kill from Giza cut the lead down to 7-2. East Stroudsburg then used three different three-point runs to extend their lead to 13-3. The Huskies put together two-straight points thanks to a kill from Buell and sophomore Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) but the Warriors answered with a two-point run of their own.  After a kill from sophomore Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) cut the lead to 15-6, ESU pushed its advantage to 19-6. The Huskies used a service ace from junior Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and a Warrior attack error to cut the lead in half, 20-10. The Warriors and Huskies each had a two-point run before ESU went 3-2 in the last five points to take the second set 25-14.

East Stroudsburg went on a 6-0 spurt to open the third set. Giza halted the run with a kill and the two teams traded kills for three of the next four points with a Huskies service error in the mix. Leading 8-3, the Warriors used five-straight points to push their lead to 13-3. The Huskies put together a 6-1 run to climb back in and cut the lead back to 14-9 but the Warriors answered with a three-point run of their own to push their lead back to 18-9. With Buell serving, the Huskies got three points back, 18-12, but East Stroudsburg rounded out the set with a 7-4 run to win 25-16 and take the match.

Buell led the Huskies with a career-best 20 assists for the match while adding a pair of kills and five digs. Giza led Bloomsburg with eight kills while sophomores Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and Rachel Hutchinson (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) each posted 11 digs.
