MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match to Millersville, Friday evening. The Huskies fell 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 to the Marauders and dropped to 8-18 on the year and 3-10 in the conference while Millersville improved to 19-7 on the year and 9-4 in PSAC action.
Sophomore
Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) led the Huskies with 18 assists while sophomore
Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) had eight kills for the match. Junior
Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) had 16 digs to lead both teams for the match. Sophomore
Mia Nicholes (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) led Bloomsburg with six blocks.
The first set opened with the two teams battling back and forth until the Huskies took a 5-4 lead on Cianciulli's ace. A kill from Millersville's Carley Baughman got the Marauders back to the service line and the home team rattled off six-straight points to take a 10-5 lead. A kill from sophomore
Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) briefly halted the Marauders run but put together a 7-1 run to take a 19-7 lead and hold command of the set. Bloomsburg climbed back in as a pair of kills from Mooney cut the lead to 20-9 and Bloomsburg used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 22-14. After the two teams traded the next two points, Bloomsburg fended off the first set point with a kill from freshman
Julia Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) to make it 24-16 in favor of Millersville. The Marauders closed out the set with a kill from Jayci Suseland to give Millersville a 1-0 lead in the match with the 25-16 set win.
Millersville raced out to a 9-3 lead to kick off the second set thanks in part to the serving of Chyna Gubbings. Another kill from Giza disrupted the Marauders run but the Huskies offense struggled to find consistency in the second set and couldn't string together more than three points. With Mooney serving, Bloomsburg scored three-straight to cut the lead to 21-14 but the Marauders closed out the set with a four-point run to win 25-14 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Huskies turned the tide to open the third set as they battled to build an 8-5 lead. Millersville got three points back to tie the set at 8-8. The set was tied three more times until Bloomsburg took a 12-11 lead thanks to a block from Mooney and Nicholes. The blocked kicked off a 6-1 run to give the Huskies a 16-12 lead. A kill from Haley Butler started a 9-2 run for Millersville as the Marauders re-took the lead at 22-18. Burcin got the Huskies back to within one, 22-21, with a kill and a service ace but the Marauders closed out the set outscoring the Huskies 3-1 to win 25-22 and the match in three sets.
The Huskies look to rebound as they travel to West Chester on Saturday to face the Golden Rams in a PSAC contest at 1:00 p.m. The Golden Rams are 15-11 and 3-10 in conference play after their sweep of Lock Haven Friday night.
