BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The sixth-ranked Bloomsburg University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1, double-overtime setback to visiting West Chester University on Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) quarterfinal match at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Huskies, who won the 2018 conference title, saw their bid for a repeat fall short but they are still very much alive for a second consecutive berth into the NCAA Division II tournament as they entered as the top-ranked team in the Atlantic Region. Bloomsburg will learn of its national tournament fate on Monday, November 18, when the 2019 selection show is aired on NCAA.com.
Bloomsburg dropped to 16-2-1 on the season while West Chester improved to 12-4-2 on the year.
West Chester's Katie Croutharmel stunned the Huskies when she scored with just 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime as she chipped a centering pass from Jenna Peters past Bloomsburg redshirt junior goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) for her sixth goal of the season. The tally sent the Golden Rams to the semifinal round of the conference tournament as they will square off against Edinboro on Friday at Slippery Rock.
The visitors took it to the Huskies early and eventually dented the scoreboard in the 26th minute when Hannah Zach notched her team-leading 11th goal of the season just over the outstretched arm of Hawkins into the top right corner. Dani Cady had the assist on the lone goal of the opening half.
The goal snapped Hawkins' consecutive scoreless streak at 604:25 as she had not allowed a goal since the 35th minute of the Huskies' 4-1 home win over Shippensburg on October 16.
Bloomsburg mustered just one shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes while West Chester had four.
The Huskies jumped out of the gates quickly in the second half and were rewarded when senior
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) sprinted up the right wing, received a pass from junior
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional), and drilled a shot past Golden Rams' netminder Hayley McGee for her fourth goal of the year just 2:13 into the final stanza of regulation. Hoelke, meanwhile, earned her tenth assist of the season on the goal giving her back-to-back campaigns with double-digit helpers. She tied the program record with 12 last season.
Bloomsburg narrowly missed winning in regulation when a header from sophomore
Paige Harris (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) was stopped by a Golden Rams' defender in the 83rd minute with McGee out of position. Then, just two minutes and change into the first overtime, the Huskies had another golden opportunity when Hoelke and sophomore
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) nearly took advantage of some West Chester miscommunication. Hoelke eventually got a shot attempt away but McGee was there to knock down the attempt to keep the score deadlocked.
Bloomsburg outshot West Chester, 13-10, for the match including a 12-6 margin over the course of the second half and the overtime periods. The Huskies also held a slim 3-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Hawkins dropped to 16-2-1 overall on the year as she finished with four saves while McGee moved to 3-0 by turning aside an identical four shots.
The NCAA tournament teams will be announced on Monday, November 18, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with the selection show being aired on NCAA.com.
