Broadt's Penalty Stroke Sends Field Hockey Seniors Off With a 1-0 2OT Win

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – With 1:07 left in double overtime, junior Alyssa Broadt (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) sent her seniors off with a win as the Bloomsburg University field hockey team defeated the Mercyhurst University Lakers 1-0 in both teams' season finales. The Huskies finished the year at 7-11 and 4-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while the Lakers ended at 3-15 for the year and 1-9 in the PSAC.

With the score knotted at 0-0 for a majority of the game, the Huskies looked to find the back of the cage before the end of overtime. Senior Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) ripped a shot from the top of the circle with less than four minutes to play after a penalty corner by the Lakers' goalie, Gabriella Amico made a glove-save to keep the Huskies off of the board. Sophomore Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) did her best with a tough shot just over a minute later but was also denied by Amico. With 1:07 left to play before the game went to strokes, Broadt got hooked in the circle and was award a penalty stroke. Broadt crushed a shot into the far-left corner of the cage for the game-winning goal and her first of the season.

Junior goalie Hannah Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) kept the Lakers off of the board in the first quarter as she made three saves in traffic in the first 10 minutes of action. Perkins took the first shot of the day for Bloomsburg at the 12:36 mark but was stopped by Amico. The second quarter was played much like the first but Bloomsburg couldn't capitalize on three penalty corner opportunities and settled for the 0-0 tie at halftime.

The Huskies came out shooting in the third quarter and out-shot the Lakers 7-2 in the period. Sophomore Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) took the first shot for the Huskies but was turned away at the 33:44 mark before freshman Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made her first save of the game at 36:22 after coming into the cage at halftime. Senior Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had the final shot of the quarter with 1:41 to play but Amico continued her impressive play in cage and made the stop to keep the game scoreless.

Bloomsburg out-shot the Lakers 2-0 in the fourth period in a quarter highlighted by the defense and Perkins final shot in regulation when just wide as the game headed into overtime.

The first overtime period was kicked off by another Perkins shot that went wide. The Huskies defense went to work as they did not allow a Laker shot in the first overtime period. Bloomsburg took three more shots in the period, all saved by Amico.

Shaffer made another stop to open the second overtime period on the Lakers' only shot at the 73:26 mark. With the minutes waning in the game, the Huskies offense continued to pressure the Lakers backline until the foul was called in the circle to set up the game-winning penalty stroke.

Shaffer earned the win for the Huskies in cage as she made a pair of saves in 48:53 worth of action and finished her freshman campaign with a 4-7 overall record. Amico took the loss for the Lakers after making 14 saves as she played the whole game. Amico dropped to 3-11 for the season.

Following the game, the Huskies honored their four graduating seniors – Ali McKay (Dover, Del./Polytech), Rachael Strockbine (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), Willow Perkins (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), and Tesa Hoffman (Freeburg, Pa./Selinsgrove Area). The four helped Bloomsburg to a 40-34 overall record over the last four years and three PSAC tournament appearances.
