Football Wins Third Straight; Knocks Off Millersville, 26-21, Saturday Afternoon

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Redshirt freshman quarterback Logan Leiby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) posted 286 yards of total offense and three total touchdowns, and redshirt freshman wide receiver Steven Arrington (Bensalem, Pa./Father Judge) broke out with a career-high 120 yards receiving, as the Bloomsburg University football team won its third consecutive game on Saturday afternoon with a 26-21 victory at Millersville University. The Huskies improved to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Marauders dropped to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the division.

Leiby completed 16-of-27 for 210 yards and two touchdowns and then added a career-high 76 yards rushing and another score on 16 carries as he helped the Huskies to 412 yards of total offense and nearly 40 minutes in time of possession on Saturday afternoon. Leiby completed passes to just four different receivers with Arrington leading the way with a career-high 120 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Senior Michael Allen (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) hauled in a team-high eight passes for 85 yards and one score while redshirt junior Nyfease West (Philadelphia, Pa./North Penn) and senior Duffy Gilhool (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) combined to catch the other two passes for a total of five yards.

Redshirt sophomore Khalil Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter Thomas) led the ground attack with 78 yards on 18 carries while West chipped in with 49 yards on 11 totes. All told, the Huskies had 202 yards rushing and 210 yards through the air. After not eclipsing 300 yards of total offense through the first seven weeks of the season, the Huskies have gone over 400 yards in each of the last two games and have totaled 959 yards and ten touchdowns during the span.

Leiby started the scoring on the opening drive of the game as he capped off an 11-play possession with a one-yard plunge into the endzone with 9:37 left in the opening quarter. Sophomore Cameron Shollenberger (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) added the extra point to give the Huskies a 7-0 advantage. The Marauders, however, answered right back on their first drive as quarterback Collin Shank found Jon Haynes for a 29-yard touchdown reception. Chris Persiko booted the point after to knot the score at 7-7 with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

The Leiby-to-Arrington connection hooked up for the longest offensive play of the season for the Huskies to open the second quarter as Bloomsburg regained the lead. Off of play-action, Arrington got behind the Marauder defense, and Leiby hit him in stride for what resulted in a 71-yard touchdown reception to give the Huskies a 14-7 lead - following Shollenberger's extra point - with 11:57 left in the first half. The touchdown was the first of Arrington's collegiate career and proved to be the final points of the half as the Huskies took a seven-point lead into the break.

The teams again went back-and-forth to open the second half as the hosts tied the game at 14-14 with 11:40 left in the third quarter after Shank hit Kevon Newerls for a 77-yard touchdown reception. The Huskies responded with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock, which culminated with a four-yard touchdown pass from Leiby to Allen. However, Shollenberger missed the extra point, which left Bloomsburg with a six-point lead, 20-14, with 4:36 left in the third.

Back came Millersville. Shank found Haynes for a 17-yard touchdown on the Marauders' ensuing possession, and Persiko nailed the extra point to give Millersville its first lead of the game - 21-20 - with 1:13 left in the third.

Bloomsburg responded and recaptured the lead when Shollenberger made up for the missed extra point by drilling a career-long 47-yard field goal on the Huskies' next possession to give Bloomsburg a 23-21 lead with 12:43 left in regulation. The 47-yarder was the longest by a Huskies' kicker since Tyler Smith booted a 47-yard field goal against Millersville on October 10, 2015. Shollenberger's previous career-long was 39 yards earlier this season against Mercyhurst.

Following a three-and-out by the Marauders' offense, the Huskies put together another scoring drive which, again, was capped off by a Shollenberger field goal - a 36-yarder - to extend Bloomsburg's lead to 26-21 with 8:27 left in regulation.

Millersville had two offensive possessions down the stretch but could not get past midfield as the Huskies' defense stiffened. Then, Bloomsburg got the ball back with 1:51 left in regulation, and Leiby sealed the deal with a career-long 33-yard run on third-and-six as the Huskies were able to run out the clock.

Bloomsburg outgained Millersville, 412-371, with a substantial 202-64 margin on the ground. Shank had a strong outing for the hosts by going 23-of-37 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Newerls had 98 yards receiving on three catches while Haynes hauled in a team-high eight passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

Leiby, over the last two weeks, has completed 32-of-46 for 482 yards and six touchdowns while adding another 114 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Over his first seven games, Leiby threw for 913 yards and four scores with just an additional 49 yards on the ground.

Junior linebacker Aaron Trumino (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley) paced the Huskies' defense with eight total tackles and a fumble recovery. Redshirt sophomore Cameron Young (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) added six stops on the day while sophomore Chase Heath (Dover, Pa./Dover Area) and redshirt sophomore Sir Michael Larsen (Philadelphia, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) each had one sack on the afternoon. Christian Martir led the Marauders with 11 total tackles.

Bloomsburg will look to make it four straight next Saturday, November 9, when it hosts new PSAC rival, Shepherd University, at Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Following the results of Saturday's action, Slippery Rock will be the west representative in the title game, so the Huskies will now host Edinboro University on the final Saturday of the 2019 season - November 16 - at noon.
