Max Effort Lifts Men's Basketball To 85-77 Victory At Seton Hill Sunday Afternoon

GREENSBURG, Pa. - Redshirt junior Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) could not be stopped on Sunday afternoon as he poured in a career-high 32 points to lift the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to an 85-77 victory at Seton Hill University. The Huskies improved to 3-3 overall and earned their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win as they improved to 1-1 in league play. The Griffins dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 against conference foes.

Wagner was 13-of-16 from the floor and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the foul line en route to his career-high 32 points. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, blocked three shots, and recorded a pair of steals in the victory.

Senior Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) added 15 points, five rebounds, and eight assists while freshman Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added 12 points, two assists, and a team-high three steals.

Bloomsburg never trailed as Wagner started the scoring with a pair of foul shots just over a minute into the contest. After Seton Hill's Drew Green tied the game with a dunk on the Griffins' next possession, back-to-back buckets from Mauras pushed the advantage to 6-2 with 16:47 left in the first half. The Huskies continued to pour it on and eventually built the lead to 27-11 with 7:16 left in the opening half after Wagner went 2-for-2 at the foul line.

The Huskies and Griffins exchanged baskets the rest of the half, and Bloomsburg held a 12-point lead at the break, 39-27. Wagner had 14 points in the first half to pace the Huskies while Nathan Davis and Marrek Paola had a team-high seven points apiece for Seton Hill in the opening 20 minutes.

The second half opened with eight straight points by the Huskies on close-range makes from sophomore Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West), Wagner, Anderson, and Wagner again as Bloomsburg took its largest lead of the afternoon - 47-27 - with 17:29 left. The advantage continued to grow as the Huskies built the lead to a game-high 23 points, 55-32, after a pair of foul shots from Mauras with 13:19 remaining in regulation.

Then, all of a sudden, things got interesting as Davis - and the rest of the Griffins - caught fire. Bloomsburg still led 63-43 with 10:38 left before a Davis triple got the Huskies' lead back into the teens. Over the next eight minutes, Seton Hill went on a 28-12 run as Bloomsburg saw its lead evaporate and found itself leading by only one, 75-74, with 2:11 left in regulation.

Foul shooting and defense took over for the Huskies as they went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch and came up with crucial stops to hang on for the eight-point victory.

Wagner started the streak at the charity stripe with a 2-of-2 trip with 1:50 left to build the lead back up to three. At the other end, Anderson came up with a huge block to give the Huskies the ball back with a minute left. Redshirt senior Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) missed a jumper but was able to steal the outlet pass and, after getting fouled, knocked down a pair of foul shots to give the Huskies a 79-74 lead with 54 seconds left. Paola missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the other end, and sophomore Devon Ferrero (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) pulled down a big rebound and promptly hit two free throws to push the lead to seven, 81-74, with 27 seconds left.

Green hit a triple for Seton Hill to trim the lead to four, but Anderson nailed a pair of foul shots at the other end to get the advantage back up to six, 83-77, with 24 seconds left. Ferrero sealed the deal with a big block on the defensive end, and Saxton finished off the scoring with two free throws as the Huskies escaped with the hard-fought victory.

Wagner had 18 points in the second half while Mauras added ten over the final 20 minutes to pace the Huskies offensively. Bloomsburg was 4-of-8 from the stripe early in the second half before its 10-of-10 performance down the stretch to hold off the Griffins' rally attempt.

Davis led Seton Hill with 24 points and eight rebounds while Tommy Sekunda had 16 points off the bench before fouling out late in the game. Green had a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds.

Bloomsburg shot 30-of-59 (50.8%) from the field but was just 2-of-9 (22.2%) from long range. The Huskies, however, shot 23-of-29 from the foul line (79.3%). Seton Hill was 28-of-61 (45.9%) from the floor and 7-of-23 (30.4%) from deep. But, the difference was at the line where the Griffins were 14-of-25 (56.0%) from the stripe - which includes Davis' 8-of-8 performance. Seton Hill did hold a 41-29 advantage on the glass.

The Huskies will take some time off before getting back on the floor on Monday, December 2, when they host Cheyney University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
