BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) recorded her first double-double of the season and freshman
McKenna Hayward (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) provided a tremendous offensive spark off the bench as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team overcame a slow start to knock off visiting Holy Family University, 67-62, on Tuesday at the Nelson Field House. With the win, the Huskies improved to 2-3 overall while the Tigers dropped to 2-2 on the season.
Montana poured in a game-high 22 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double since scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 68-63 win over Shippensburg on March 2, 2019. She was 8-of-14 from the floor and knocked down 6-of-7 foul shots en route to her season-high 22 points. Montana averaged 4.5 points in her first two games but is scoring 19.3 points per game over the last three contests. She has moved to within 83 points of becoming the latest Bloomsburg player to record 1,000 career points.
Hayward, meanwhile, was sensational off the bench as she scored a career-high 18 points - on 8-of-10 shooting - in 26 minutes. She also connected on 2-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc - the Huskies' only triples of the game and their first since going 6-of-17 at Chestnut Hill last Wednesday.
Holy Family started strong and jumped out to a 20-10 lead after the opening quarter as the Huskies committed five of their 13 turnovers, and shot only 4-of-11 from the field, through the first ten minutes.
But, the Huskies erased the ten-point deficit as they scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to take a 21-20 lead with 5:53 left in the first half. Montana caught fire as she scored the Huskies' first seven points which was followed by a beautiful fast-break layup by freshman
Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) - off of an assist from Hayward - and then a basket from Hayward capped off the 11-point run. The visitors, however, did not go away as they scored the next four points to retake a three-point lead, 24-21, with 4:44 left in the opening 20 minutes. Montana hit a pair of foul shots and junior
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) knocked down a layup to give the Huskies a 25-24 lead with 2:49 left before the Tigers scored seven of the next ten points to take a 31-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Hayward then took over as she scored nine of her 18 points in the third quarter as Bloomsburg held a 50-46 lead through three periods. After the Tigers scored the first basket of the half to extend their lead to five points, Hayward quickly countered with a layup and a three-pointer to knot the game at 33-33 with 8:36 left. The teams continued to go back-and-forth until the Huskies scored the final five points of the quarter to take a four-point lead into the fourth. Montana gave the Huskies the lead for good with a three-point play and Saxton followed with a layup just before the buzzer sounded to close out the period.
Holy Family pulled to within a point, 52-51, at the outset of the fourth quarter before Hayward provided another dagger with her second triple of the game to give the Huskies a four-point advantage, 55-51, with eight minutes left. After the Tigers cut the lead to two, Bloomsburg went on a 9-2 run to build up a nine-point lead with 1:27 left before settling for the five-point win.
Corridoni had her best game of the season with nine points and three rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench as she continues to work her way back from a season-long injury a year ago. Oeth added seven points and seven rebounds in 14 solid minutes off the bench while Saxton also chipped in seven points while playing all 40 minutes.
Elizabeth Radley had a double-double for Holy Family in a losing effort as she scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Bloomsburg was 24-of-56 (42.9%) from the floor and 2-of-10 (20.0%) from long range. Holy Family shot 23-of-48 (47.9%) from the field and 5-of-17 (29.4%) from deep. But, the difference came at the foul line and on the glass. Bloomsburg was 17-of-21 (81.0%) from the stripe while the Tigers were 11-of-17 (64.7%) and the Huskies held a 37-25 rebounding edge which included 13 offensive boards that led to 22 second-chance points.
The Huskies will be off until heading to Division I Lehigh University for an exhibition game next Tuesday, December 3, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Bloomsburg returns to the regular season on Saturday, December 7, with a home contest against Pitt-Johnstown at 3:00 p.m.
