MILLERSVILLE, PA -
Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) scored a team-high 15 points and splashed in four three-pointers, but the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team shot just 35.3% from the floor in a 63-58 road loss to Millersville Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Huskies drop to 17-8, 12-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East, while the Marauders improve to 11-13 (8-9 in the PSAC), and have won five of their last six games.
Mack was just one of two Huskies to reach double figures in the loss, as
Megan Brandt (Lebanon, Pa./Northern Lebanon) added 10 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes of action. Bloomsburg shot just 24-of-68 from the field as a team, and 7-of-23 (30.4%) from three-point territory.
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York), the Huskies leading scorer entering the day, was held to just six points on 2-of-4 shooting, but did add six rebounds and three assists. For Saxton, the six points ends a streak of 16 consecutive games in double-digits for the sophomore.
The Huskies defense was unable to corral Millersville's Lauren Lister, who played the full 40 minutes en route to a game-high 29 points. Lister ranked 12th in all of Division II in points per game (22.0) entering the contest. Olivia Mottern added 16 points and four rebounds, and Courtney Dimoff grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Bloomsburg came out hot in the first quarter, building a quick 7-0 lead thanks to a three-pointer from
Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) and a layup from
Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick). A Brandt layup would extend the Huskies lead to as large as seven late in the quarter, but a 7-2 Millersville run to close the quarter would trim the Bloomsburg lead to 16-14 after one.
The Marauders carried momentum into the second quarter, using an 8-0 run to build a 23-16 lead with 6:35 to play in the half. Lister had five points in the run for Millersville. The Huskies would answer with a 7-0 run of their own to tie it at 23-23 thanks to a triple from
Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and back-to-back buckets from
Darcy Lee (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle), and Bloomsburg would retake the lead with 4:08 to play in the half on a deep three from Mack. The teams would trade baskets late in the quarter, with a Lister free throw giving the Marauders a 29-28 lead at the half.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, Millersville would take control in the forth, building a seven-point lead early in the period after a pair of buckets from Lister and a layup by Mottern. The Huskies would trim the deficit to as a little as three with 1:37 to play in the game, but the Marauders would fend off the Bloomsburg rally to hang on for the victory.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, Bloomsburg is now tied with Kutztown (who defeated Mansfield Saturday) atop the PSAC East. The Huskies have already clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament and the right to host a first round game, and will earn the right to host the conference semifinals and championship game with a division crown.
Bloomsburg remains on the road this Wednesday for a PSAC East battle with East Stroudsburg. The Huskies then return home to wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games against Mansfield and Shippensburg. Tip-off with the Warriors is slated for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
