PHILADELPHIA, PA -
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) smacked a pair of home runs and drove in three RBI in game one, and
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) followed with two homers and three RBI of his own in game two as the Bloomsburg University baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of the University of the Sciences Saturday afternoon. The Huskies defeated the Devils 7-2 in game one, before completing the sweep with an 11-3 victory in game two.
OFier kicked off the 2019 season in exciting fashion, blasting a two-run homer in the top of the first inning that would score
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), who led off the game with a single to center. The Huskies would add three more runs in the top of the fourth when
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School) walked to force in a run, and
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) knocked in two more runs with a single up the middle.
OFier was at it again in the sixth inning, nailing his second homer of the game off of Jake Patridge. The sophomore tallied four home runs in 50 appearances as a true freshman for the Huskies a season ago. Swiger would cap the victory with a sacrifice fly that plated
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) in the top of the seventh.
OFier was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored in the game, while Burcin was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and a walk.
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, while
Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who went 7-3 and was named First Team All-PSAC in 2018, picked up right were he left off Saturday, allowing just two earned runs and fanning seven in five innings of work.
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) was lights out in relief for the Huskies, striking out five in two scoreless innings.
It was Swiger's turn to showcase Bloomsburg's power in game two, blasting a two-run shot in the top of the first that would again score Chasanov. After an error would pull the Devils to within one in the bottom of the second, the Huskies would erupt for five innings in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-1. Burcin got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly that plated OFier, and Holmes followed with a single to right that scored Krizan. Back-to-back doubles from
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) would bring home two more runs, and Chasanov would cap the big inning with an RBI single to left.
The Huskies would tack on their eighth run of the game in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Shiffer that scored Krizan, but the Devils would look to rally in the bottom half of the inning, tallying two runs on a single from Nick Amicon.
Swiger would halt any momentum swing in the top of the sixth, however, smacking a solo shot off of Joseph Jachimiak that would give Bloomsburg a 9-3 lead. Swiger would score again in the eighth, when Burcin knocked a two-RBI single that brought home Swiger and Chasanov.
Swiger was 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs batted in, and three runs scored in game two, while Chasanov went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Burcin was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and three RBI, and Krizan went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) got the ball for the Huskies in game two, and allowed just two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. The sophomore surrendered just one hit and struck out five, but did have five walks.
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) was sensational in relief for Bloomsburg, striking out eight and keeping the Devils without a hit in 4.2 scoreless innings.
Bloomsburg will look to complete the series sweep with another doubleheader at the University of the Sciences tomorrow afternoon. Due to potential weather in the forecast, the start time for game one has been moved to 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, PA.
