Softball Drops Pair at Lincoln Memorial Tuesday

HARROGATE, TN - Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game one, but the Bloomsburg university softball team dropped a pair of games to Lincoln Memorial University Tuesday. The Huskies rallied from a three-run deficit in game one to tie it in the sixth inning, but a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning would give the Railsplitters the win in game one. Lincoln Memorial later polished off the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.

The Railsplitters, now 20-4 on the season, were fast out of the gates in game one, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI triple from Sierra Hucklebee. Lincoln Memorial would tack on two more runs in the third inning on a pair of RBI singles from McKenzie Henry and Kelsie Hocutt, but Bloomsburg would fight back.

Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got the Huskies on the board in the top of the fourth with a single to left that scored Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh). Barnes would score again in the top of the sixth when Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) laced a triple to left center, and she would score on the very next at bat when Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) reached on a bunt.

The game remained knotted until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Jacie Pittman smacked a walk-off single that brought home Kelsie Tuggle. Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) took the loss for the Huskies, while Justice Smith tossed 2.1 scoreless innings and earned the win for Lincoln Memorial. Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) started the game for Bloomsburg allowed three earned runs on six hits over 7.1 innings of work. The sophomore has been sensational in the circle so far this season, giving up just three earned runs and striking out 16 batters in 20.1 innings pitched.

The Railsplitters would once again jump out to a quick lead in game two, as Kelsie Hocutt broke the seal in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to left. Lincoln Memorial's lead would hold until the top of the fifth, when Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double that scored Impink.

Game two would not stay tied for long, however, as the Railsplitters plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seize control. Hucklebee got the scoring started with an RBI single that scored Savannah Daniel, and Hucklebee would later score on an error. Tuggle would cap the big inning with a two-out single that brought in two more runs.

Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter) hoped to jump start a rally in the seventh when she knocked in Impink with a single to center, but Bailey Griffith would shut the door to earn her second save of the year. Faith Howe started the game for Lincoln Memorial and surrendered two earned runs on five hits in 6.1 innings. Hocutt was 2-for-3 with two RBI in game two, and Hucklebee was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Getz went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Huskies in game two, while Impink was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Baney got the nod in the circle in game two, and gave up four earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.

Bloomsburg will travel to Greeneville, Tennessee, Wednesday for a doubleheader at Tusculum College. The Huskies will then make their way to North Carolina for a twinbill with Catawba College on Thursday, before wrapping up the southern swing with a pair of games at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, North Carolina, on Saturday. First pitch with Tusculum is set for 1:00 p.m.
