MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Senior
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) wiggled out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Huskies exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth inning of game two as the Bloomsburg University baseball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action with a doubleheader split at #25 Millersville University on Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one, 7-4, Bloomsburg bounced back for a 7-1 nine-inning victory in game two to salvage the split. The Huskies moved to 10-4 overall while the Marauders saw their record go to 14-7 on the season.
After seven sensational innings from sophomore
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) in game two, the Huskies summoned senior
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) to preserve a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth. After the first two Millersville batters reached base, Newmyer was called from the bullpen. The senior righthander got Ben Snyder to flyout for the first out of the inning but the fly ball was deep enough to advance both runners to second and third with one out. After an intentional walk to Dominic Hardaway, head coach
Mike Collins brought an outfielder in to give the Huskies five infielders as they looked for an inning-ending double play. Newmyer, instead, did the job himself as he struck out Christian Del Toro on three pitches and then punched out Jimmy Losh on four pitches to end the threat.
Bloomsburg used the momentum to its advantage in the top of the ninth as it broke the game open with six runs to take a 7-1 advantage. Junior
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School) and sophomore
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) started the rally with back-to-back singles and then junior
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) was intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out. Sophomore
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) drew a four-pitch walk from Millersville reliever Andrew Mayhew to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. Junior
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 4-1 and then a pair of Marauders' errors allowed three unearned runs to score for a 7-1 margin. Newmyer slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first victory of the season.
The Huskies scored their first run of the game in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Junior
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) was hit by a pitch with two outs, advanced to second on a walk to freshman
Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), and then scored on a single by Krizan off of Millersville starter Drew Miller.
Stoner was brilliant until the Marauders finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Luke Trainer. The sophomore righthander went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out seven in the no-decision. Miller, meanwhile, lasted four and one-third innings and allowed one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Daniel Ross was saddled with the loss as he allowed the hits to Krizan and Reed in the ninth with both crossing the plate for the Huskies' second and third runs of the game.
Bloomsburg had eight hits in game two with Krizan leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish. Snyder had two of Millersville's five hits in the nightcap.
Game one featured a pitching matchup between Bloomsburg senior
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Millersville senior Eli Nabholz.
The Marauders scored an unearned run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 advantage. Bloomsburg answered with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit in half, 2-1. Freshman
Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) laced a ball into the right-center field gap and attempted to stretch the hit to a triple. The throw which tried to nail Sinatore at third got away which allowed the freshman to come all the way around to score the Huskies' first run of the contest. Sinatore was credited with a triple and an error.Â
Millersville extended the advantage to 4-1 in the home half of the fourth on a two-run single from Snyder. But, the Huskies batted back in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4. Reed started the rally with a one-out walk and, two batters later, Swiger belted his fourth home run of the season - a two-run shot - to trim the lead to 4-3. OFier followed with a solo shot to left field to tie the score at four apiece.
But, the Marauders got all three runs back in the bottom of the fifth to regain their three-run advantage at 7-4. Nick Graham brought home the first run with an RBI single and Cole Friese followed later in the inning with a two-run home run to extend the advantage.
The Huskies threatened in the top of the sixth with back-to-back singles from sophomore
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Sinatore, but Millersville reliever Tyler Yankosky got out of the jam without any damage. Senior
Colton Hooker (Warrington, Pa./Upper Moreland) struck out on a 13-pitch at bat and then Krizan and freshman pinch-hitter
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) were retired to end the frame. Bloomsburg went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh as Millersville took game one.
Raines suffered his first loss of the season as he fell to 2-1 on the year. He went four and two-thirds innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on five hits. He walked two, struck out four, an also plunked four batters. Newmyer shut down the Marauders over the final inning and one-third registering one strikeout. Nabholz got a no-decision for Millersville as he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in four and two-thirds innings. He walked three and struck out three. Aiden Welch came on for three pitches to record one out in the top of the fifth to earn the victory. Yankosky recorded his second save of the season as he went the final two innings.
Bloomsburg had six hits in the opener - two each from Swiger and Sinatore. Friese had two of Millersville's five hits in game one as he went 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs scored, and two runs batted in.
The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday afternoon in the home opener for the Huskies at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
