BLOOMSBURG -
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tossed a two-hitter in game one and
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) allowed just one hit in a five-inning game two win as the Bloomsburg University softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep over Jefferson Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies downed the Rams 6-0 in game one, and cruised to a 9-0 win in game two.
Wild's sensational start to the 2019 season continued Tuesday, as the sophomore struck out seven and walked just one batter in seven scoreless innings. This marks the second straight two-hit outing for Wild, who know sports a sterling 0.88 earned run average (ERA) in 61.1 innings pitched and a 7-4 overall record.
Baney was equally impressive in game two, surrendering just one hit in a five-inning complete game shutout. The sophomore did not walk a single batter and struck out five in the win.
It did not take long for the Huskies to seize control in game one, as
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) scored on an error in the bottom of the first to give Bloomsburg a quick 1-0 lead.
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) would score on a passed ball later in the inning to extend the lead to 2-0 after one.
Wild helped herself at the plate in the bottom of the fifth when she roped a single to left that plated
Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), and DelPierre later followed with a single that scored Wild and
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown).
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) capped the four-run inning with an RBI groundout that brought in
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh).
The Bloomsburg offense continued to cook in game, as the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a bases loaded walk to
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and a single from
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) that scored Barnes and DelPierre.
Bloomsburg added three more runs in the second on three consecutive RBI doubles from DelPierre, Shelhamer, and Impink to take a commanding 6-0 lead, and
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) put a bow on the impressive offensive performance when she belted a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the third.
DelPierre continued her torrid start to the season at the plate, notching four hits and three RBI on the afternoon. The freshman is now batting a whopping .476 with a .522 on-base percentage in 63 at bats. Shelhamer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in game two, while Winkelman was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Impink and Wheeland both notched a pair of runs batted in for the Huskies in game two.
The Huskies have now won five straight games and are just one game under .500 at 9-10 overall after a 1-6 start to the season. Bloomsburg opens up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central play this Friday at Mansfield University, before returning home this Saturday, March 30, to host Lock Haven. First pitch in game one with the Mountaineers is slated for 2:30 p.m.
