Spehrley Lifts Baseball To 4-1 Win At Winston-Salem State Monday; Huskies Complete Three-Game Sweep

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior righthander JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and eventually combined with junior Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) on a three-hitter as the Bloomsburg University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Winston-Salem State University on Monday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over the Rams. The Huskies have now won four straight to improve to 6-1 on the young season while the Rams have dropped five consecutive games and are now 10-5 overall.

Spehrley did not allow a hit until a leadoff single by Kendal Tucker in the bottom of the seventh inning. Prior to that, the righthander allowed only one baserunner through six innings - a two-out walk to Joe Joplin in the bottom of the third. Spehrley improved to 1-0 on the year after a no-decision in his first start at the University of the Sciences on February 24. He went seven innings on Monday and allowed an unearned run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Offensively, the Huskies managed only five hits themselves on the afternoon but scored a run in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 3-0 advantage - which proved to be plenty of offense for Spehrley.

In the visitors' half of the fourth, junior Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) led off with a walk, stole second, and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a groundout was unable to get the run home, junior Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School) lifted a fly ball to right that was deep enough to plate Swiger for the first run of the game. The Huskies threatened for more as they loaded the bases following the sacrifice fly. Freshman Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) singled which was followed by back-to-back walks to junior Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and sophomore Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown). The Rams called Parker Strader from the bullpen and he was able to retire freshman Jack Sullivan (Harleysville, Pa./Germantown Academy) to avoid any further damage.

Bloomsburg added to the lead in the fifth as redshirt freshman Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) reached on a one-out double and then advanced to third on a bobble by the left fielder. Swiger then reached on an error which allowed Chasanov to score to extend the lead to 2-0. After a failed pickoff attempt allowed Swiger to take second, sophomore Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) brought home the second run of the inning with an RBI single as Swiger crossed the dish.

The Rams scored their only run of the game on an RBI single from Cole Parks with two outs in the bottom of the seventh against Spehrley.

Bloomsburg added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when freshman Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) reached on an error which allowed redshirt sophomore Christian Ciotti (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) to score the Huskies' fourth run of the game. Cooperman slammed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.

Cooperman pitched the final two innings and allowed a hit and a walk with two punchouts.

Chasanov had two of the Huskies' five hits on the afternoon with OFier, Wiik, and Holmes each collecting one.

The Huskies will be off until Wednesday, March 13, when it heads to Virginia State University for a doubleheader against the Trojans. First pitch from Petersburg, Virginia, is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Bloomsburg will then play St. Thomas Aquinas for a three-game series in Colonial Heights, Virginia, on Friday, March 15, and Saturday, March 16. Bloomsburg is scheduled to play its first home games of the season on Friday, March 22, against Millersville at Danny Litwhiler Field.
