Baseball Uses Late-Inning Magic To Earn Doubleheader Sweep At East Stroudsburg Friday

GAME 1 HTML BOX SCORE | GAME 2 HTML BOX SCORE

STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh of game one and then got a mammoth home run from sophomore Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) in the top of the seventh inning of game two as the Huskies swept a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg University on Friday afternoon. Bloomsburg took game one by the final of 4-2 and then completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap to improve to 20-8 overall and 9-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. The Warriors dropped to 23-11 overall and an identical 9-5 mark in the division.

Not only did the Huskies come up with some late-inning magic, but the pitching staff was superb as five pitchers combined to allow just eight hits to an East Stroudsburg team that entered hitting nearly .300 on the season.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the top of the sixth in game one, the Huskies tied the game on a two-out, run-scoring single that snuck through the left side of the infield from junior Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) as OFier, who hit a ground-rule double to lead off the inning, trotted home from third. Then, in the seventh, junior Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) drew a leadoff walk but his pinch-runner, redshirt sophomore Christian Ciotti (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township), was erased on a fielder's choice at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by junior Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School). Redshirt freshman Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) then doubled to put runners at second and third with one out, forcing the Warriors to go back to the bullpen as CJ Gonzales was summoned. Bloomsburg was able to notch its first run of the inning when Gonzales balked home Krizan, and then junior Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) singled on an 0-2 pitch to plate Chasanov for an insurance run.

Senior Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who was dealing all afternoon, gave way to fellow senior Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Newmyer, which he has done all season long, slammed the door with a pair of strikeouts to register his league-leading fifth save of the season. He lowered his earned run average to 0.54 on the year and has recorded 29 punchouts in 16.2 innings of work.

Raines improved to 4-1 on the season while needing only 70 pitches to go six and one-third innings. He allowed two runs on five hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out two. Connor Johnson went five innings and got a no-decision for East Stroudsburg. He allowed a run on four hits, did not walk a batter, and also struck out two. Justin Guidos suffered the loss as he gave up the tying run in the sixth and then was charged with both runs in the seventh. Guidos fell to 3-2 on the year.

Bloomsburg drew first blood in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Swiger that scored freshman Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), who ran for sophomore Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) after he led off the inning with a single.

After being held to just one hit through the first four innings, the Warriors broke through with two runs on three hits in the fifth to take a 2-1 advantage. CJ Lopez plated the first run with a sacrifice fly while Mike Sulcoski drove home the other run with an RBI single.

The Huskies out-hit the Warriors, 8-5, in game one with Krizan and Sinatore leading the way with a pair of singles each. OFier, Newbert, Swiger, and Chasanov had the other hits for Bloomsburg.

Game two featured another strong pitching matchup between Bloomsburg sophomore Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and East Stroudsburg's Cam Voss.

The Warriors broke through first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Brock Kauffman drove home the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly while Anthony Torreullas later scored the second run on a wild pitch.

Bloomsburg answered right back with four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. Newbert led off the inning with a ground rule double and then, after Swiger was retired, back-to-back walks to Holmes and freshman Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) loaded the bases with one out. Krizan got the Huskies on the board with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Chasanov followed with a two-run single to score both Holmes and Wiik to give the Huskies their first lead of the nightcap. East Stroudsburg called Chase Nowak out of the bullpen and he allowed a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sinatore before getting out of the inning by retiring sophomore Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) on a roller to second.

East Stroudsburg tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth that were charged to junior Ed Herbener (Drums, Pa./MMI Preparatory School). After pitching around a two-out error in the fourth, Herbener gave up a leadoff walk to Brainy Rojas who then stole second and scored on a triple by Torreullas as the Warriors trimmed the Bloomsburg lead to 4-3. Senior Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) came on in relief and retired Kauffman on a grounder to short before allowing a sacrifice fly to Christian Rishel for the game-tying run. He then pitched around a two-out walk to get out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Nowak got two quick outs before OFier powered a 1-0 offering well beyond the right field fence to give the Huskies a 5-4 advantage. With the blast, OFier took over sole possession of the team lead in home runs with seven.

Hinkle pitched around a one-out walk in the home half of the seventh to preserve the victory. Hinkle improved to 3-0 on the season after going three scoreless innings of relief. He did not allow a hit, walked two, and struck out three. Stoner pitched the first three and allowed two runs on two hits, walked three, and struck out three. Herbener was charged with a pair of runs in an inning-plus of work.

The only hit Nowak allowed in three and two-thirds innings was the game-winning home run by OFier and saddled him with the loss as he dropped to 5-2 on the year. He walked one and struck out four. Voss went the first three and one-third innings and allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Bloomsburg had only five hits in game two - two from Chasanov and one each from OFier, Newbert, and Krizan. The Warriors were limited to three safeties in the nightcap - two from Torreullas.

The teams will conclude the weekend series at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday, April 13, with first pitch being thrown at 1:00 p.m.
