Wild Notches a Pair of Victories as Softball Sweeps Mansfield Saturday Afternoon

GAME 1 HTML | GAME 2 HTML

BLOOMSBURG, PA - Sophomore pitcher Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) picked up a pair victories in the circle as the Bloomsburg University Softball team swept a home doubleheader with Mansfield University Saturday. Wild fanned 10 and allowed just four hits in a 4-1 victory in game one, and surrendered just two earned runs in 4.2 relief innings as Bloomsburg rallied for an 8-5 game two win. The Huskies improve to 22-13 overall, and 9-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central with the sweep, while Mansfield falls to 11-11, and 5-5 in the Central.

Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got things rolling early in game one as she ripped a two-out RBI single down the third base line to plate Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter) and give the Huskies the 1-0 advantage. The Huskies added to their lead in the top of the fourth when Julia Knight (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville) hit an RBI single out to right which allowed Starr to score her second run on the day.

Mansfield answered back in the top of sixth when Joelle Snyder scored on a sacrifice fly from Lacey O'Donnell, but Bloomsburg responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to end any hopes of a Mountaineers rally. Impink kick-started the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI knock from Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield), and Winkelman later came in on an error to make it 4-1.

Winkelman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in game one, while Starr, Impink and Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each had a pair of hits for the Huskies. Arianna Young got the nod in the circle in game one and gave up three earned runs on 11 hits. Cassidy Smith paced Mansfield at the plate with a pair of hits.

Game two had all the makings of another pitchers dual, as Mansfield led 2-0 through 5 innings, but the Huskies exploded for a eight runs in the bottom half of the sixth to seize a commanding 8-2 lead. Wild helped herself with an RBI single up the middle that scored Impink, and Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) laced a double to left center that plated Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Starr capped the big inning with a single to left that scored Shelhamer.

The Mountaineers rallied for a trio of runs in the top of the seventh, but Wild worked out of the jam to preserve her second victory of the day. Shelhamer, Erney, and Starr had two hits apiece for the Huskies in game two, while Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Mansfield.

Bloomsburg hits the road for a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg this Wednesday, April 17. The Huskies will resume PSAC Central play next Friday, April 19, at home against Pitt-Johnstown. First pitch in game one with the Warriors is set for 2:30 p.m.
