LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Senior righthander
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) threw a complete-game one-hit shutout in game one and, in the process, became the Bloomsburg University baseball program's all-time leader in career strikeouts as the Huskies took the opener by an 11-0 final at Lock Haven University on Saturday afternoon. Bloomsburg then completed the sweep with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory to move closer to securing a spot in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament. The Huskies improved to 28-10 overall and 16-6 in the PSAC Eastern Division while the Bald Eagles dropped to 18-20-1 overall and 11-11 in the division.
Raines was masterful on Saturday as he allowed only a leadoff single to Max Joseph in the second inning to improve to 6-1 on the season. He walked three and struck out six, throwing 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes. It was his second consecutive shutout as he lowered his season ERA to 2.19. He closed out the shutout in style, striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh with his punchout of Pedro Peguero to lead off the frame making him the program's new strikeout king. It was the 183rd strikeout of his career, breaking the previous record of 182 by Sean Holden from 1997-99.
The senior righthander got all of the offense he would need in the top of the first as fellow senior
Ryan Shiffer (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) continued to swing a scorching hot bat by driving home junior
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) with a two-out RBI single off of Lock Haven starter Jesse Slinger for a 1-0 lead. Holmes led off the game with a double.
The Huskies blew the game open in the top of the second as they scored seven times on just three hits to take an 8-0 lead after two innings. Redshirt freshman
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) led off with a double and then scored on a run-scoring double by sophomore
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area). Two batters later, Holmes was intentionally walked to load the bases for sophomore
Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) who was plunked by a pitch to push the lead to 3-0. Sophomore
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) then drew a bases-loaded walk before Shiffer launched a grand slam home run to left to complete the scoring in the inning. It was Shiffer's fourth round-tripper of the season - all coming in the last seven games.
Sophomore
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) extended the advantage to 9-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single that scored OFier, who reached on a one-out walk, from second. Newbert ballooned the margin to double digits with a solo home run to lead off the top of the sixth. It was his fifth bomb of the year. Then, in the seventh, OFier led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout from Reed, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Holmes for the final run of the game.
Lock Haven's best chance to score came in the bottom of the first when the Bald Eagles loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and an error. However, Raines got out of the inning with a double play off the bat of Colby Hiddemen and was never in trouble the rest of the afternoon.
Slinger took the loss for Lock Haven as he fell to 2-5 on the season. He allowed nine runs on six hits and four walks in three innings of work.
The Huskies had 11 hits in game one with Shiffer going 3-for-3 with a home run and five runs driven in. Chasanov and OFier each had a pair of hits with OFier scoring a game-high three runs.
Sophomore
Nick Stoner (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) got the ball in game two for the Huskies and allowed a first-inning run as Lock Haven grabbed its first lead of the afternoon.
Bloomsburg answered right back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Shiffer, once again, started the rally with a leadoff double, against Lock Haven starter Scott Leitholf, and then advanced to third on a double by junior
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin). A third consecutive double - this time off the bat of Chasanov - plated both Shiffer and Swiger to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. OFier plated Chasanov on a run-scoring groundout for a 3-1 advantage.
Lock Haven's Demetrius Haskins brought the Bald Eagles to within a run in the bottom of the second with a two-out home run to left field and then the hosts took a 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the third when Isaac Porter touched up Stoner for a two-run homer to left center.
But, in the top of the fifth, Newbert struck again with a leadoff home run to knot the game at 4-4. It was his second home run of the year and sixth of the season - all coming in the last eight games. Bloomsburg was not done, however, as Chasanov doubled to left with two outs and then scored on a double from junior
Nate Krizan (Montoursville, Pa./Home School) to give the Huskies a 5-4 advantage.
Stoner allowed a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the fifth but got of trouble with an infield popup which ended his afternoon. The sophomore righthander gave way to the dynamic duo out of the bullpen - seniors
Trey Hinkle (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and
Zach Newmyer (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) - and the two slammed the door on the Lock Haven offense. Hinkle, who has not allowed an earned run in 11 appearances, pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning and Newmyer did the same in the seventh to record his conference-leading seventh save of the season.
Stoner improved to 5-2 on the season after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out eight. Leitholf suffered the loss for the Bald Eagles as he dropped to 4-3 on the year. He was tagged for five runs on ten hits in five innings while walking one and striking out seven.
Bloomsburg finished with a dozen hits in game two with Chasanov pacing the offense with a 3-for-3 performance while also scoring twice, driving in two, and stealing a pair of bases. Shiffer and Reed each had two hits in the game-two victory. Shiffer extended his hitting streak to 14 consecutive games during which he is batting .564 (22-of-39) with four home runs and 17 RBI.
The Huskies and the Bald Eagles are scheduled to wrap-up the four-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon, April 28, with a twinbill at Danny Litwhiler Field. First pitch has been pushed back one hour and will now begin at 2:00 p.m.
