CLARION, PA -
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in game two as the Bloomsburg University softball team wrapped up the regular season with a pair of wins over Clarion Sunday afternoon. With the wins, the Huskies finish with a record of 30-15 overall, and clinch the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central crown heading into to next week's conference tournament in Quakertown, Pa. with a 15-5 divisional mark. Bloomsburg earned a 12-1 victory in game one, and followed with a 9-2 triumph in the nightcap.Â
Bloomsburg used a pair of big innings to do its damage in game one, plating five runs in the first inning and five more in the second to jump out to a commanding 10-0 lead through two.
Kalynn Wheeland (South Williamsport, Pa./South Williamsport) and
Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) had RBI singles in the first inning, while Wheeland, Dobson,
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia),
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), and
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) all had RBI knocks in the bottom of the second.Â
The early lead would be more than enough for Huskies pitcher
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), who struck out six and allowed just one earned run on four hits in the five-inning victory. Wild closes out the regular season with a record of 17-7 and a team-high 151 strikeouts.
Wheeland went 2-for-3 with three RBI in game one, while Shelhamer and Dobson each had two hits and two runs batted in. Makenzie Wolfe had the lone RBI for Clarion in the loss.
Game two would feature another pair of big innings for the Huskies, who tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on four more in the bottom of the sixth to take an insurmountable 8-0 lead through six. Impink highlighted the fifth inning rally with a two-run blast that scored
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./21st Century Cyber Charter), and followed with an RBI single that scored
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) in the bottom of the sixth.Â
Winkelman went 4-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored in game two, while Shelhamer and Barnes had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored apiece.
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) got the nod in the circle for Bloomsburg in game two and surrendered just two earned runs on four hits in the complete game victory.
The Huskies will be the top seed in the PSAC Central in next week's conference tournament, which is set to begin this Wednesday, May 1, at 6:00 p.m. West Chester claims the top seed in the PSAC Eastern Division, and defending champion Gannon earns the top seed in the PSAC West.
