JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Sophomore hurler
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) threw a complete-game three-hit shutout in game two as the Bloomsburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies dropped game one, 7-2, before bouncing back for a 3-2 victory over the Mountain Cats in game two. Bloomsburg moved to 16-13 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC Central with the split, while Pitt-Johnstown is 13-11 overall, and 5-3 in the Central.
Baney put on a stellar performance in game two, tossing her fourth shutout on the year and allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out five. Kristie Radvan slapped two of those hits for Pitt-Johnstown, singling in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the seventh, while Taylor Mendicino collected the other hit off a lead-off single in the third.
The Huskies gave the sophomore the offensive support she needed in the top of the third with two runs off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Alyssa Hileman. Senior
Alexa Erney (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) started the inning when she belted a solo home run to right center to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead.
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) would keep the rally going with a one-out double before fellow freshman
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) brought her home with an RBI single to right to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead.
Bloomsburg added to their lead in the top of the fifth when Senior
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) knocked a single and Barnes reached on an error. Both runners would advance one more base after DelPierre singled up the middle,
Marissa Shelhamer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the Huskies lead to three.
Pitt-Johnstown threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second, but Baney once again shut the door to deny the home team a run and preserve the shutout. Hileman dropped to 4-3 on the year after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings of work. Ashley Pagliei pitched the remaining two innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out one.
Radvan was strong at the plate for Pitt-Johnstown in game one as well, knocking in a pair of runs in the bottom of the third with a single that scored Olivia Porter and Morgan Cannin to give the Mountain Cats a 2-0 lead.
The PItt-Johnstown lead would balloon to four in the bottom of the fourth on RBI knocks from Porter and Jade Stubblefield, but the Huskies punched back in the top of the fifth with two runs on RBI singles from DelPierre and
Kelsey Impink (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
The comeback would end there, however, as the Mountain Cats tacked on a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth to salt away the 7-2 victory. Porter was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in game two, while Cannin was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Kristen Coffay notched the win in the circle for Pitt Johnstown, surrendering just two earned runs on 10 hits in the complete game victory.
Barnes and Shelhamer each went 2-for-4 at the plate for the Huskies in game two.
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) got the start in the circle for Bloomsburg and had six strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
The Huskies wrap up a six-game road trip this Tuesday, April 9, with a doubleheader at Millersville University. First pitch in game one with the Marauders is set for 4:00 p.m.
