QUAKERTOWN, PA -
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) smacked a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but the Bloomsburg University softball team was unable to erase an early deficit in a 5-1 loss to Seton Hill in the second round of the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship Thursday. The loss eliminates the Huskies from the double-elimination tournament.
It was an opponent's hot start that would serve as the Huskies undoing once again Thursday, as Seton Hill tallied four runs in the opening frame thanks to a single Morgan Toal that brought in a pair of runs and an RBI single from Griffins pitcher Devyn Terry. Bloomsburg had chances to answer early, putting runners in scoring position in the first and second inning, but Terry managed to work out of both jams to preserve the 4-0 lead.
Seton Hill's lead would remain at four until the bottom of the fourth, when Christiana Skrabak smacked an RBI single that scored Brooke Bower to extend the lead to five. The Huskies would finally break through in the top of the seventh when Baney launched a solo bomb to left center and
Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) and
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) both worked walks with nobody out, but Griffins reliever Leighann Pettis notched the final three outs to end Bloomsburg's run to a PSAC title.
Taylor Winkelman (Springfield, Pa/Springfield) went 2-for-4 for the Huskies in the loss, while
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and
Emily Getz (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) also had hits for Bloomsburg. Baney got the nod in the circle and surrendered just one earned run in 4.0 innings, while
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
Bower went 2-for-4 with two runs scored at the plate for Seton Hill, and Toal went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Terry was excellent in the circle for the Griffins, stiking out five and allowing just one earned on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Huskies, who sport an overall record of a 30-17, were ranked eighth in the latest Division II Atlantic Region rankings this week, and will hope for a potential nod when the regional selections are announced next Monday, May 6, at 10:00 a.m. on NCAA.com.
