BLOOMSBURG, PA - The Bloomsburg University women's tennis team's run to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship was ended in a 4-0 loss to Slippery Rock in the tournament semifinals Friday. The Huskies fell to 15-3 overall on the season with the loss.
The Rock notched the team doubles point when Lauren Fadden and Allie Welch defeated
Siena Cerra (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and
Isabella Sarquis (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Metodo) 6-1 in the #3 spot, and Lacey Cohen and Olivia Warner downed
Taylor Capoferri (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Giovanna Bonito (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Reino) 6-2 at #2 doubles.
Cassidy Calimer (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) and
Vitoria Nery (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Educandário Santa Maria Goretti) trailed Viola Lugmayr and Lois Page 4-3 in the #1 doubles position when the match was called.
Slippery Rock dominated the singles portion of the match as well, as Fadden defeated
Cassie Wentz (Windber, Pa./Winber Area) 6-1, 6-0 at #5, Cohen downed Capoferri 6-0, 6-2 at #1, and Welch took out Sarquis by a final of 6-0, 6-3 at #6 to secure the shutout win. Nery and Bonito both won their first sets for Bloomsburg at #3 and #4, respectively, and Lugmayr held a one-set lead over Calimer at #2 when those matches were called.
Mercyhurst defeated West Chester 4-1 in the other women's tennis semifinals, which sets up a Championship battle between the Lakers and Slippery Rock tomorrow at the Burt Reese Tennis Center. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
