EDINBORO, Pa. - Senior
Michael Allen's (Oley, Pa./Fleetwood) first collegiate punt return for a touchdown - a 65-yard score with 4:50 left in regulation - lifted the Bloomsburg University football team to a 24-21 come-from-behind victory at Edinboro University in front of nearly 3,300 fans at Sox Harrison Stadium. The Huskies evened their record at 1-1 on the season while the Fighting Scots dropped to 0-2 overall.
Allen hauled in a Corey Badaracco punt at the Bloomsburg 35-yard line and went untouched 65 yards to paydirt for the longest return of his career and his first career punt return for a score to give the Huskies their first lead of the day, 22-21, with 4:50 left. Bloomsburg went for two on the ensuing point after try and redshirt freshman quarterback
Logan Leiby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) called his own number, flipped over a defender, and converted the attempt to give Bloomsburg a 24-21 advantage.
Bloomsburg wisely played keep away from Edinboro's dangerous return man Ta'Nauz Gregory on the ensuing kick but still gave the Fighting Scots good field position as a fair catch by Jake Cervik at the Edinboro 43-yard line put the hosts 57 yards away from paydirt. The Fighting Scots drove to the Bloomsburg 39 before redshirt sophomore
Sir Michael Larsen (Philadelphia, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) ended the drive by recovering a fumble after his own strip sack of Edinboro quarterback Andrew Tomko. The Huskies then ran out the clock, picking up a huge first down on a seven-yard run from junior
Nyfease West (Philadelphia, Pa./North Penn) on third-and-six during the game-ending drive.
The Fighting Scots never trailed until Allen's punt return as the hosts jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and held a 21-13 advantage late in the third stanza before the Huskies rallied.
Tomko accounted for all three Edinboro touchdowns as he connected with Damien Woody on a seven-yard reception to cap off the opening drive of the contest and then scampered up the left sideline for a 19-yard touchdown run with 10:25 left in the second quarter as the Fighting Scots jumped out to a 14-0 advantage.
Bloomsburg, which was limited to 51 total yards of offense in the opening half, dented the scoreboard when senior
Qmac Quiteh (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) found the endzone from eight yards out - his second rushing touchdown of the season - with 1:58 left in the second quarter. The drive started at the Edinboro 10-yard line after a bad snap on a punt attempt. However, sophomore
Cameron Shollenberger's (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) point after try was blocked and the Fighting Scots took a 14-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Leiby and the Huskies drove down the field to start the second half and the redshirt freshman quarterback capped off the drive by finding senior
Duffy Gilhool (Upper Chichester, Pa./Chichester) in the corner of the endzone from 12 yards out for his first collegiate touchdown pass with 9:58 left in the third quarter. Shollenberger nailed the extra point and the Huskies trailed 14-13.
But, the Fighting Scots answered right back with a four-play, 70-yard drive that Tomko finished with a two-yard touchdown run to push the Edinboro lead back up to eight points, 21-13, with 7:56 left in the third. The drive was aided by a huge 61-yard pass play from Tomko to Gregory down to the Bloomsburg two-yard line.
Shollenberger pulled the Huskies to within five points, 21-16, with 1:25 left when he drilled a 37-yard field goal to end a 14-play, 61-yard drive that took six-and-a-half minutes off the clock. Bloomsburg missed a golden opportunity to take the lead as it had a first-and-goal from the Edinboro three-yard line midway through the fourth quarter after a 41-yard pass from Leiby to redshirt freshman
Steven Arrington (Bensalem, Pa./Father Judge). But, the drive stalled on a rush for a loss, a sack, and an incomplete pass. Shollenberger came on to attempt a 39-yard field goal but missed wide left with 6:04 left in regulation.
The Bloomsburg defense, however, came up with a huge three-and-out to set up Allen's heroics.
For the second consecutive week, the offense struggled although it did show signs of life - especially in the second half. The Huskies finished with just 220 yards of total offense on the afternoon but had 169 of those yards in the third and fourth quarters. Leiby was 12-of-22 for 143 yards and one touchdown throwing the football. Allen hauled in five passes for 61 yards while Gilhool caught three for 26 and the score. Arrington had 52 yards on two receptions. The ground game, however, was limited to just 77 yards on 41 carries (1.9 yards per attempt). Quiteh led with 33 yards on 17 carries while redshirt sophomore
Khalil Nelson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastery Charter Thomas) had 21 yards on 10 attempts.
Defensively, Bloomsburg held Edinboro to 267 yards of total offense - just 107 of those coming in the second half. Tomko was 18-of-30 for 194 yards and also led the Fighting Scots on the ground with 61 yards on 14 carries. He had a hand in all three Edinboro scores - two rushing, one passing. Gregory caught seven passes for 113 yards to lead the receiving corps.
The Huskies held the ball for 34:28 and went 8-of-17 on third down conversions as the offense did a nice job keeping the Edinboro offense off of the field. The Fighting Scots, meanwhile, were just 4-of-14 on third downs.
Defensively, junior
Chris Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) led the Huskies with seven total tackles and one of Bloomsburg's four sacks. Senior
Alex Annan (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg), redshirt sophomore
Tyshaun Pollard (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East), and redshirt freshman
Gabe Tilford (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) had six tackles apiece. Brandon Anderson led Edinboro with 10 tackles on the afternoon.
