SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Megan Callan (Eldersburg, Md./Century) scored with four seconds left in regulation to lift the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Shippensburg University on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division showdown. The Huskies improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in divisional play while the Raiders dropped to 3-2 and 1-2, respectively.
Bloomsburg dominated the action all night but the game was tied at 1-1 until Callan drilled a shot to the upper left corner past Shippensburg goalkeeper Delaney Shifflett at 89:56 to send the Huskies to their fourth win in five games. It was Callan's first goal of the season and was her first game-winning tally since September 13, 2017 against Lock Haven. Of Callan's six career goals, three have now been game-winners.
Despite outshooting Shippensburg 16-3 in the opening half, the Huskies found themselves trailing 1-0 at intermission thanks to a goal from Taylor Moore at 39:34. Moore took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by the Huskies and beat redshirt junior goalkeeper
Jenna Hawkins (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood) low for her first goal of the season.
The Huskies bounced back just over seven minutes into the second half when junior
Lauren Hoelke (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) buried her second goal of the year on a free kick. Shifflett got her fingertips on the shot but was unable to get enough of it to keep it from crossing the goal line. Hoelke has now taken over the team lead in scoring with two goals and three assists for seven points.
Bloomsburg maintained pressure in the second half, outshooting the Raiders, 19-2, over the final 45 minutes. However, the Huskies needed to the bitter end to get the game-winning tally from Callan.
For the game, the Huskies held a 35-5 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kick opportunities. Hawkins earned the victory in goal for the Huskies as she turned aside two shots to improve to 4-1 on the season. Shifflett kept the Raiders in the contest as she stopped 12 Bloomsburg shot attempts on the evening. She fell to 3-2 on the year.
Over the last two games, Bloomsburg has attempted 85 shots while limiting Mansfield and Shippensburg to 11.
Bloomsburg returns home to Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, September 21, to host new PSAC-rival Shepherd University. Start time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
