ELKINS, W. Va. - The Bloomsburg University women's volleyball team was back on the road Friday evening and dropped a pair of matches to Davis & Elkins and Alderson Broaddus to fall to 3-7 overall on the season. Davis & Elkins knocked off the Huskies in straight sets - 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 - while the Battlers needed four sets to take down Bloomsburg by the scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14.
In the opener, sophomore
Grace Giza (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) continued her strong early play as she totaled half (15) of Bloomsburg's total kills (30) while hitting .344 for the match. Sophomore
Sydney Buell (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was next with six kills while also contributing three service aces, four digs, and a pair of assisted blocks. Sophomore
Bryn Stek (Ambler, Pa./Upper Dublin) led the squad with 20 assists and junior
Alyssa Cianciulli (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) posted a match-high 28 digs.
While the scores were close, the Senators held an advantage in most statistical categories. Bloomsburg hit just .092 for the match while Davis & Elkins posted a .237 team hitting percentage. The Senators also out-blocked the Huskies, 6-4, and had 48 kills to Bloomsburg's 30. However, the Huskies stayed in the match by nearly taking advantage of ten Davis & Elkins service errors and five Senator blocking errors.
Against Alderson Broaddus, the Huskies had no answer for Ashlyn McDonald who posted 24 kills and 19 digs in the four sets. Bloomsburg received a team-high ten kills from sophomore
Mary Kate Mooney (Royersford, Pa./Pope John Paul II) and nine from freshman
Julia Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty). Giza added seven kills and tied Burcin with a match-high six assisted blocks. Mooney added nine digs and four assisted blocks.
Freshman
Brooke Kratzer (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) led Bloomsburg with 19 assists and posted a double-double by adding 11 digs. Stek added 12 assists and six digs. Cianciulli continued her streak of consecutive matches hitting double figures in digs as she finished with a match-high 30. She has reached double digs in all 38 matches in a Bloomsburg uniform.
Bloomsburg hit .085 for the match while Alderson Broaddus hit .250. Both teams were strong at the net as the Battlers posted 12 blocks while the Huskies had 11.
The Huskies will continue their road swing on Saturday with matches against Virginia Union (11:00 a.m.) and West Virginia Wesleyan (1:00 p.m.) in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
