SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior
Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) led four players in double figures with 22 points but the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team suffered a 102-78 loss at Shippensburg University on Wednesday night at the Heiges Field House. With the loss, the Huskies dropped their second straight contest and fell to 7-9 overall and 4-6 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Raiders, meanwhile, improved to 13-3 overall and 9-1 in the division.
Mauras finished 9-of-17 from the field (1-of-3 from long range) and was 3-of-4 at the line en route to his 22 points. It marked his third consecutive 20-point scoring effort and it was his fifth such output of the season. Redshirt junior
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) added 16 points in 20 minutes off the bench while sophomore
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) and freshman
Justin Rodriguez (Easton, Pa./Morristown-Beard) chipped in 11 points apiece. For Rodriguez, it was the first time he reached double-digits in his young collegiate career.
The 78 points scored by the Huskies are the third-highest total allowed by the Raiders in a single game this season.
Statistically, the game was fairly even with the exception of two categories - rebounding and free throws. The Raiders dominated on the glass, 43-27, with Shippensburg pulling down 18 offensive rebounds which led to 20 second-chance points. At the line, the Huskies were 11-of-13 (84.8%) - their second-highest percentage of the season. However, Shippensburg got to the line 27 times and made 22 (81.5%) as it outscored Bloomsburg by 11 points from the charity stripe. The Huskies were whistled for 24 fouls compared to just 11 committed by the Raiders over the course of the contest.
Bloomsburg kept things close in the first half and built up a 12-6 advantage after a triple from Rodriguez nearly five minutes into the contest. However, the Raiders responded with a 9-0 run to take a 15-12 lead with 13:30 remaining in the opening frame. From that point, the teams traded blows and found themselves tied at 34-34 with 4:50 left before Shippensburg went on a 14-4 burst to close the opening half with a 48-38 advantage.
The Raiders extended their lead to 15 points - 55-40 - less than three minutes into the second half before Bloomsburg went on a 16-8 run over a four minute span to trim the deficit to seven, 63-56 with 13:27 left in regulation. The Huskies kept the margin within single digits and trailed 66-59 with 12:46 left before Shippensburg pulled away by scoring 31 of the game's next 40 points to extend its lead to a game-high 29-point margin - 97-68 - with 4:23 remaining.
John Castello paced five Raiders in double figures as he finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds.
Bloomsburg shot 31-of-65 (47.7%) from the field, 5-of-13 (38.5%) from three-point range, and 11-of-13 (84.8%) from the free-throw line. The Huskies also turned the ball over just 11 times on the evening - their second-lowest total of the season. Shippensburg was 36-of-68 (52.9%) from the field, 8-of-18 (44.4%) from deep, and 22-of-27 (81.5%) from the charity stripe. The Raiders committed 12 turnovers on the night.
The Huskies will be back in action on Friday night, January 17, when they host Lock Haven University at the Nelson Field House. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday afternoon but an announcement was made on Wednesday night to push the game ahead one day to beat an impending snowstorm expected to hit the region on Saturday.
