Women's Basketball Needs Overtime To Outlast West Chester, 56-55, Saturday Afternoon

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Redshirt junior Meghan Corridoni's (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) three-point play with just over a minute left in overtime proved to be the difference as the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team edged West Chester University, 56-55, on Saturday afternoon at Hollinger Field House. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 12-11 overall and 9-10 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. The Golden Rams fell to 8-15 overall and 6-12 in the division.

Tied at 47-47 at the end of regulation, West Chester scored the first four points of the extra session to take a 51-47 lead before senior Bella Ricci (Etters, Pa./Red Land) buried a three-pointer to trim the deficit to one - 51-50 - with 3:22 left in overtime. The Golden Rams built the lead back up to three with 2:39 left but a foul shot from junior Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) and a layup from Ricci tied the game at 53-53 with 2:29 remaining. The score remained tied until Corridoni's layup and foul shot gave Bloomsburg a 56-53 lead with 1:19 left in overtime. West Chester's Sasha Marvel hit a layup with 43 seconds remaining to trim the Huskies' lead to one but Bloomsburg was able to hold on as a last-second shot attempt from Justyn Roberts misfired.

It was a tale of two halves for the Huskies as they limited West Chester to just 12 points in the opening twenty minutes and raced out to a 29-12 advantage at the break. However, Bloomsburg was held to only 18 points on the offensive end in the second half - six points in the fourth quarter - as the Golden Rams battled back to force overtime.

Saxton led the Huskies with 18 points as she played all 45 minutes on Saturday afternoon. Ricci added 15 points on the day - her highest point total since totaling 16 points at East Stroudsburg back on January 8. Senior Taylor Montana (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) was also in double figures as she finished with 10 points despite playing only 18 minutes because of foul trouble. Corridoni ended up with eight points and eight rebounds.

Bloomsburg led 11-3 after the opening quarter and then outscored the Golden Rams, 18-9, in the second quarter to build up its 29-12 margin at intermission. West Chester still trailed by eight, 41-33, after three quarters despite outscoring the Huskies by a 21-12 margin in the third frame. The Golden Rams completed the comeback with a 14-6 edge in the fourth quarter. Roberts gave the hosts a two-point lead - 47-45 - with 3:48 left before Saxton scored one minute later to tie the game at 47-47. Neither team would score over the final 2:45 of regulation.

Both teams struggled from the floor - Bloomsburg finished 22-of-61 (36.1%) while West Chester went 19-of-53 (35.8%). The Huskies also had a slight edge in three-point shooting as they went 3-of-12 (25.0%) while the Golden Rams made only 1-of-9 (11.1%). West Chester stayed in the game at the line as it went 16-of-19 (84.2%) while Bloomsburg was 9-of-12 (75.0%).

The Huskies held a 42-35 edge on the glass which included a season-high 18 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points.

Roberts paced West Chester with 18 points while Leah Johnson added 14 on the afternoon.

Bloomsburg will be back in action on Wednesday night, February 19, when it heads to Lock Haven University for a matchup against the Bald Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Huskies, fifth in the PSAC East, can clinch a spot in the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday with a win and a West Chester loss at Kutztown.
