BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team had five players finish in double figures on Wednesday night as the Huskies knocked off visiting Kutztown University, 83-71, at the Nelson Field House to conclude the 2019-20 season. The Huskies won their last two games to finish with an 11-17 overall record and an 8-14 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings. Meanwhile, the Golden Bears, who are still trying to clinch a postseason spot, fell to 11-16 overall and 9-12 in the PSAC East.
Redshirt junior
Max Wagner (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) recorded his second consecutive double-double - fourth overall - as he poured in 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Junior
Maqi Watson (Philadelphia, Pa./Mathematics, Civics, and Sciences Charter) also had a double-double performance - his second of the season - by chipping in 14 points and a season-high tying 12 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. He also tied a season-high with three blocks in the win.
Freshman
Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) tied Wagner with a game-high 21 points while also adding five assists and three steals. Anderson finished the season by breaking the program record for most points by a freshman in a single-season with 478. The previous record was set by Mike Wenrich who finished with 443 points in his freshman year of 1979-80.
Senior
Ky Mauras (Reading, Pa./Reading) added 13 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while redshirt senior
Sam Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) chipped in 10 points. Mauras concluded his career with 1,066 points - 25th on the school's all-time list. His six dimes on Wednesday gave him 301 for his career as he became just the seventh player in school history to reach 300 assists. Saxton, meanwhile, wrapped up his Huskies' career with 693 points.
The Huskies, who only had six players enter the game on Wednesday night, got their other four points from sophomore
Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West).
Kutztown was ahead for much of the first half but could never build a lead larger than five points as both teams got off to a relatively slow start offensively. Bloomsburg took its first advantage of the game, 16-15, when Watson knocked down a pair of foul shots with 7:07 left in the opening half. The Golden Bears regained the lead, 23-21, with 4:21 remaining before the Huskies went on a 14-2 run to close out the opening stanza and to take a 35-25 lead into the break. Wagner had seven of the team's 14 points over the final four minutes while Anderson chipped in with five. Mauras added the other two as Bloomsburg built up its largest advantage of the contest.
Kutztown's Akello Mosby pulled the Golden Bears to within eight after scoring the first points of the second half. But, a layup from Wagner put the Huskies' lead back into double digits on Bloomsburg's first possession of the second half and the lead never got under ten the rest of the way. The hosts led by as many as 18 points - 47-29 - with 17:15 left and still were ahead by 17 points - 72-55 - with 5:47 remaining before settling for the 12-point victory.
After starting the game by missing 12 of its first 15 shots, Bloomsburg caught fire and made 10 of its last 16 shots in the opening half as it built up the ten-point advantage. The shooting carried over into the second half where the Huskies went 18-of-31 (58.1%) over the final twenty minutes to keep the Golden Bears at arm's length. For the night, Bloomsburg was 31-of-62 (50.0%) from the field, 6-of-18 (33.3%) from deep, and 15-of-20 (75.0%) from the foul line.
The visitors, meanwhile, just couldn't get shots to fall all night against a stingy Huskies' defense. Kutztown finished 27-of-75 (36.0%) from the floor and made only 5-of-24 (20.8%) from beyond the arc. The Golden Bears were 12-of-15 (80.0%) from the charity stripe. Rebounding favored the visitors by a 44-40 margin with Kutztown pulling down 16 offensive boards on the night.
Tarojae Brake led Kutztown with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Bloomsburg finished the campaign with an 11-17 overall record and an 8-14 record in the PSAC East. The Huskies went 8-5 at the Nelson Field House which included in each of their last three home games and in four of their last five. The 11 victories marks a four-win improvement from a season ago while the eight conference victories are five more than last season.
