Women's Lacrosse Offense Shines in 24-9 Win over Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team's offensive power was on full display as the Huskies defeated Wilmington University 24-9, Friday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improved to 3-1 on the year while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3 for the season.

Leading the way for the Huskies was senior Kirsten Wozniak (Oradell, N.J./River Dell Regional) with a career-day on the offensive side of the field. Wozniak finished the day with seven points behind six goals and one assist. The goals and points total were both career highs for the senior. Junior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) tied her career-best with five goals and set a career high in draw controls with nine. Bergman won the opening draw of the second half to eclipse 100 career draw controls for the Huskies. Freshman Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) chipped in four goals and a pair of assists for a career-high in goals and points. Junior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) won a career-best 12 draws to reach the 100 draw control plateau as well. Dempsey added two goals and picked up four ground balls in the Huskies lopsided win.

Between the pipes, senior Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) started the game and made on save one seven shots in 17:04 worth of action. Sophomore Charlotte Williamson (Phoenixville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) finished the game and made a career-best four saves on seven shots and picked up the win. For the Wildcats, Tori Grubowski made 11 saves on 35 shots faced and took the loss.

As a team the Huskies out-shot the Wildcats 47-19 and held a 27-8 advantage in draw controls.

Bergman and Wozniak got the first two goals of the game quickly as Bergman scored just eight seconds into action after winning the opening draw and Wozniak buried her first of the game 26 seconds later. After a goal by the Wildcats at the 28:20 mark, the Huskies went on a three-goal run to take a 5-1 win just under five minutes into the game.

After the second Wildcat goal of the game at the 25:00 mark, Bloomsburg scored two straight – this time from Grace Kelleher (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and Bergman – to take a 7-2 lead with 22:54 to play in the first. Once again, the Wildcats briefly stopped the Huskies run with their third goal of the game but Bloomsburg responded with a goal from Allison Bardman (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Wozniak each to push the Bloomsburg lead to 9-3.

The two teams traded the next two goals until Wilmington scored two straight goals to cut the lead to four, 10-6, with 12:56 to play. The Huskies then went on a four-goal run, highlighted by two goals from Clauss to take a 14-6 lead with 3:11 left in the first half. Wilmington and Bloomsburg traded goals to end the half and Bloomsburg carried a 15-7 lead into the break.

After Bergman's milestone draw to open the second, the Huskies went on a six-goal run over 14:29 worth of action to take a 21-7 lead with 15:31 left in the game. Wilmington halted the run with two-straight goals but Bloomsburg closed out the game with three-straight goals from three different players – senior Cailyn Gormley (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Clauss, and Bardman – to seal the 24-9 win.

Bloomsburg got a goal from nine different players and 12 Huskies scored at least one point. Sophomore Caitlin Leap (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) dished out three assists, tying her career best.

The Huskies have the next 10 days off before they host Shepherd in the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East game of the season. The opening draw is set for 4:00 p.m. at Steph Pettit Stadium. The Rams are currently 2-0 on the year but have two contests before they visit Bloomsburg next Wednesday.
