WILMINGTON, Del. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team extended its winning streak to six as it swept a pair from Goldey-Beacom College in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies came from behind to earn a 7-4 victory in game one and then exploded for a 12-3 win in game two to improve to 7-1 on the young season. The Lightning dropped to 6-8 overall following the twinbill.
The Huskies fell behind 4-0 through three innings in the opener as the Lightning jumped out of the gates against senior righthander
Chad Cooperman (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury). Goldey-Beacom scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning but then belted three solo home runs - in the span of four batters - in the third to push the lead to 4-0.
Held in check through the first four innings by Goldey-Beacom's Jake Heskett, the Huskies began their rally in the top of the fifth. Senior
Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) led off the inning with a home run - his first of the season - to cut the deficit to 4-1. Then, after Heskett retired the next two batters, redshirt sophomore
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) kept the frame alive with a single to center. Junior
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) followed with a single back up the middle to get Chasanov all the way to third. Junior
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) then plated both Chasanov and OFier as he doubled down the left field line to pull the Huskies to within a run, 4-3.
It remained that way until the top of the seventh when the Huskies scored four times to take a 7-4 advantage. Bloomsburg loaded the bases - without the benefit of a hit - with one out against Goldey-Beacom reliever Brandon Ferrie. Senior
Gianni Sinatore (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), who pinch ran for sophomore
Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) the inning prior, came up with the big blow as he laced a bases-clearing double to give the Huskies their first lead of the game. Swiger followed, two batters later, with a sacrifice fly to plate Sinatore for the fourth run of the frame.
Sophomore
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), who pitched around a leadoff single in the sixth, allowed two runners to reach in the bottom of the seventh before retiring the final two batters to earn his first victory of the season.
Cooperman went the first five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven. His seven punchouts give him 193 for his career - five shy of breaking the school record for most career strikeouts which was set last season by
Ashton Raines (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) who finished his four-year career with 197.
Marshman, meanwhile, moved to 1-0 on the year by pitching two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed two hits and struck out three.
Both teams had seven hits in the opener. Seven different players had one hit for the Huskies with Sinatore's bases-clearing double in the seventh proving to be the difference.
Game two started off as a pitching duel between Huskies' senior righthander
JJ Spehrley (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) and Goldey-Beacom's Trevor Jump before Bloomsburg broke the game open with an eight-run sixth inning.
Bloomsburg struck first as it plated a single run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead as Chasanov drove home redshirt junior
Christian Ciotti (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) for the game's first run. The Huskies extended the advantage to 2-0 in the top of the fourth as senior
Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) singled home Ciotti.
The hosts cut the margin in half in the bottom of the fourth with their first run of the contest against Spehrley and it remained a 2-1 game until the top of the sixth when the Huskies exploded.
Wiik led off the sixth with a walk and, two batters later, Swiger doubled to drive home Sinatore - Wiik's pinch-runner - to push the margin to 3-1. Back-to-back walks - with Swiger scoring on a wild pitch on the second walk - ended the afternoon for Jump as Goldey-Beacom summoned Jake Kinsell from the bullpen. Cooperman reached on a bunt single to load the bases and then Chasanov followed with a bases-loaded walk to extend the advantage to 5-1. OFier singled to drive home Holmes for the fourth run of the inning and then Newbert broke it open with a grand slam home run to balloon the lead to 10-1. It was Newbert's first round-tripper of the season.
Chasanov and OFier added back-to-back RBI singles in the seventh to push the margin to 12-1 before the Lightning plated a pair in the home half of the inning for the final runs of the game.
Spehrley earned his first victory of the season as he allowed only one run on three hits in five innings of work. He walked four and struck out eight to even his record at 1-1 on the season. Junior
C.J. Kilgarriff (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) pitched his the first two innings of his Huskies' career to close out the contest. He stuck out one in his relief appearance.
The Huskies had 13 hits in the nightcap with Ciotti going 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the victory. OFier, Chasanov, Swiger, and Cooperman also added two hits apiece. Newbert's grand slam was his only hit of the game but helped him lead the team with four RBI.
The two teams will conclude the weekend series on Sunday afternoon with another twinbill in Delaware. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
