BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team controlled the game from the opening whistle to the final horn on Saturday as the Huskies defeated Millersville, 2-0. With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-3-1 for the year and 6-3-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action while the Marauders fall to 3-4-3 for the year and 3-4-2 in conference action.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick lead as senior
Natalie Holmes (Laurel, Md./Archbishop Spalding) buried a penalty kick at the 4:43 mark after a hard foul inside the 18-yard box on sophomore
Gina Sexton (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) set up the PK for Bloomsburg. Holmes relied on her hard shot and drilled it past the keeper for the 1-0 lead for BU.
Just over 16 minutes later, junior
Abby Groff (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) gave the Huskies a 2-0 advantage with her second of the year. Senior
Helen Flynn (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) sent the ball into the Huskies offensive zone from midfield and after Groff made a quick move around the defender, sent a rocket at the net. The ball ricocheted off of the far post and bounced by the Millersville keeper for the 2-0 advantage for BU in the 21st minute.
The Huskies controlled the pace of play and did not allow a Millersville shot until the 19:16 mark when Cassie Blyth's corner kick curved in toward the goal but hit off of the post and the Huskies took over.
The second half was quiet for both team as Millersville got just three shots off and the Huskies took four, only one on target. The Marauders did hold a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks for the match. Sophomore keeper
Alexa Ryan (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) did not need a save for her sixth shutout of the season.
For the game, the Huskies out-shot the Marauders 12-4, including a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Shippensburg for a key 4:30 pm PSAC contest.
