MERCYHURST, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University field hockey team scored at least one goal in every quarter as the Huskies rolled to a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst University in both teams' season finales, Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improved to 8-10 for the season and 2-8 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action while the Lakers dropped to 1-16 for the year and 1-9 in conference play.
Bloomsburg wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore
Alicia Carr (Shickshinny, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season just 6:23 into action. The goal came just three minutes after junior
Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made a stop on a shot that came from a Mercyhurst penalty corner.
The Huskies took three more shots in the quarter but settled for the 1-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
Bloomsburg pushed its lead to 2-0 midway through the second quarter as junior
Sydney Derr (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) found the back of the cage. Derr's goal proved to be the game-winner as the Lakers got on the board with just under three minutes to play in the half.
The Huskies put the Lakers' defense to the test in the third quarter as they were awarded four penalty corners in the first eight minutes of action. On their fourth corner,
Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) took advantage and ripped a shot from straight on and hit the back of the cage to give BU a 3-1 lead.
The Huskies extended their lead to 5-1 after a pair of goals from
Meghan Longenhagen (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) and
Sam Schaffer (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) just over two minutes apart. Senior
Foto Tsioles (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) handed out an assist on Longenhagen's goal while Schaffer tipped the ball in from the side for the tally.
Shaffer made one final save in the final 30 seconds of action to seal the 5-1 win for the Huskies.
The Huskies led the Lakers 23-8 in shots and 17-8 in penalty corners. Shaffer made four saves for the win in cage for the Huskies while Libby Jones made seven saves in the first 54:57 of the game and Kayla Desormeau made two saves in the final 5:03 for the Lakers.
