Men's Basketball Falls to Chestnut Hill in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped its season opener to Chestnut Hill, 76-69, Wednesday evening. The Huskies opened the season 0-1 while the Griffins moved to 1-2 on the year.
 
Junior Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led the Huskies in shooting for the day as he opened the season with 23 points for the day. He went 11-for-21 from the floor and was 1-for-5 from beyond the arc. Anderson added eight rebounds and three assists for the Huskies. Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) posted a season-opening double-double with 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. He chipped in an assist as well. Nelson was for 6-for-14 from the floor and 4-of-7 from the free throw line. Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) posted 12 points as they third Husky in double figures in his career debut with BU. He was 5-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-3 from three-point range.
 
As a team, the Huskies shot 42.6% (29-for-69) from the floor for the game while they were 4-for-14 from three-point range. The Huskies were 7-of-14 from the free throw line for the game. Bloomsburg out-rebounded the Griffins 45-30 for the game.
 
The Griffins had four players in double figures and were led by Joseph Iraldi with 21 points while Nigel Haughton chipped in 20 points for Chestnut Hill. The Griffins shot 50.8% (30-for-59) from the floor for the game and were 16-for-27 (59.26%) in the first half. Chestnut Hill finished the game 3-for-11 from beyond the arc and were 13-for-17 (76.5%) from the foul line.
 
Chestnut Hill led by five, 42-37, with 16:18 to play in the second half, but the Huskies chipped away and eventually tied the game at 49-49 with 11:45 to play. The score went back and forth for the next several minutes until Chestnut Hill took the lead for good, 63-61, with 6:27 to play.
 
Bloomsburg made it a three-point game with 1:04 to play thanks to a jumper from Anderson to make it 70-67 but the Griffins used a 6-2 run to close out the game and seal the 76-69 win.
 
The Huskies get back to the hardwood at Nelson Field House on Saturday as they welcome Felician to Bloomsburg for a 2:00 pm contest.
