Softball Swept by Shepherd on the Road

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va – The Bloomsburg University softball team hit the road to finish its season series against Shepherd, Saturday, and dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Rams. The Rams took the first game 9-1 in six innings and finished the sweep with a 6-2 win in the second game. The Huskies fell to 1-5 on the season and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while Shepherd improved to 10-1 on the year and 4-0 in PSAC East action.

The Rams used a big six-run second inning in the opening game to set the tone for the doubleheader. The Rams were able to plate six runs on just two hits and three costly Husky errors in the frame. Though senior Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) was able to wiggle out of a two-on, two-out jam by getting Tori Seymour swinging to end the scoring.

Junior Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) drew a walk for the third Bloomsburg baserunner of the game but the Huskies couldn't bring her home after advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Baney was able to keep the Rams off of the scoreboard in the third inning, but they tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fourth to push their lead to 7-0.

Bloomsburg broke up the shutout in the top of the fifth as senior Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) opened the frame with a single up the middle and was replaced on the basepaths by freshman Evin Fisher (Marysville, Pa./Susquenita). Junior Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) drew a walk and after a strike out, junior Sammi Starr's (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) bat stayed hot as she singled down the left field line to bring home Fisher and cut the Shepherd lead to 7-1. Redshirt junior Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) drew the second walk of the inning but the left the bases loaded in the fifth.

The Rams plated another run in the bottom of the fifth and scored the game's final run with a RBI double in the sixth to seal the 9-1 win.

Baney took the loss in the first game after going 6.0 + innings and facing three batters in the sixth, allowing nine runs, just one earned, on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two.

Shepherd jumped out to another big lead in the second game as the Rams used a three-run fourth inning to take the lead 4-0 midway through the game. The Rams added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0 with two innings to play.

Bloomsburg got on the board late once again with a pair of runs in the top half of the seventh. Senior Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) got the rally going with a one-out walk and Starr launched her first home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the lead to 6-2. Though Hannah Ruffner got the final two Husky batters out to close out the game and earn her second victory of the year.

Wild took the loss in game two after going 5.0 innings and allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits and two walks while striking out three.

Starr finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Huskies will get back on the field on Tuesday as they welcome Shippensburg University to Jan M. Hutchinson Field in a make-up doubleheader after the originally scheduled twinbill was postponed last week. The two teams take the field on Tuesday, March 16 with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm.
