Lacrosse Sinks Shippensburg, Wins 17-7 Tuesday Afternoon

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team has won three-straight as the Huskies defeated Shippensburg University, 17-7, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action, Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Huskies improved to 3-1 on the year and in conference play while the Raiders dropped to 0-5 on the year and 0-4 in PSAC East action.

Leading the way for the Huskies once again was senior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) with four goals on the afternoon. Freshman Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) continued her hot start to her career at BU with three goals, including two free position goals, while sophomore Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) added three goals herself. Sophomore Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) filled the stat sheet as she scored once, dished out three assists, picked up a ground ball, was 1-for-2 on free position shots, and caused a pair of turnovers.

Reigning PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week, graduate student Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was once again stellar in the cage for the Huskies as she made five saves, including a pair of point-blank shots on free position attempts.

The Huskies once again got off to a very quick start as Clauss netted her first goal of the game just 2:14 into action off a free position shot to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead. Bergman and sophomore Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) scored back-to-back goals and Stoll added her fifth of the year with 21:59 to play to give Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead.

The Raiders got one back thanks to a free position goal for Jessica DeMarte, but the Huskies strung together five-straight goals, including a pair from Bergman and Stoll, while senior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) capped the run with her team-leading 11th goal of the season to give the Huskies a 9-1 lead with 12:02 to play. Shippensburg answered with a pair of goals to cut the lead down to 9-3 with 3:05 to play, but Sophomore Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) found the back of the net for the first time this year at the 1:34 mark and Bergman gave the Huskies a 11-3 lead at the break with her ninth goal of the year.

Coming out of halftime, the Huskies continued to put their foot on the gas and Rollins and junior Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) went back-to-back within 29 seconds of each other just four minutes into the half to give Bloomsburg a 13-3 lead.

Shippensburg continued to push, as well, as the Raiders got a goal back halt the running clock at the 24:52 mark on Kasey Schuchardt's first goal of the season. Williams answered just a minute later with her third of the year to push the lead back to 14-4 with 23:50 to play in the game.

After Gabby Savarino scored on a free position shot to cut the lead down to 14-5, Dempsey, Roberts, and junior Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) all found the back of the net to give Bloomsburg a 17-5 advantage with just 10:41 to go.

The Raiders finished out the ball game with a pair of goals in the final four minutes of action to bring the score to its final, 17-7.

The Huskies were nearly perfect on clears, going 19-for-21 and were 4-for-7 on free position shots. The Raiders did hold the advantage in draw controls, winning 13 of the 24 draws, but the Huskies were able to cause 16 of Shippensburg's 20 turnovers.

Bloomsburg is back at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday, March 27 to wrap up a three-game home stand as the Huskies welcome #5 West Chester University. The opening draw is set for 2:00 pm. Links for live stats and the live broadcast is available at buhuskies.com.
