Women's Lacrosse Falls In Overtime At Shippensburg Saturday

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon as the Huskies suffered a 12-11 overtime decision at Shippensburg University. The Huskies fell to 6-4 overall and 6-4 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division while the Raiders improved to 4-7 overall and 4-6 in the conference standings.

Sophomore Kate Roberts (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman) paced the offense with a career-high five points on three goals and two assists while senior Anna Dempsey (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) also registered a hat trick after finishing with three goals. Dempsey has now scored at least three goals in seven of the ten games this season while Roberts recorded her third three-goal game of the year. Sophomore Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) was the only other player with multiple points as she ended with a goal and an assist.

The contest was close throughout as neither team led by more than three goals at any point on the afternoon. Shippensburg proved to be the aggressor early as the hosts raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening eight-and-a-half minutes before Roberts got the Huskies on the board with 20:21 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 3-1. It was Roberts' 13th goal of the campaign.

Eleven minutes later, the Raiders' Hannah Seifried notched her second of the game to push the margin back to three at 4-1. But, the Huskies scored back-to-back goals in a 90-second span to cut the Shippensburg advantage to 4-3. Junior Abby Kalish (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) started the rally with her eighth goal of the year off of an assist from Roberts and then Clauss tallied her sixth of the season to pull the Huskies to within a goal. However, Seifried scored two free-position goals in the last 38 seconds of the first half to give the Raiders a 6-3 advantage at the break.

Bloomsburg opened the scoring in the second half when Dempsey buried her 30th goal of the year on a free position just over two minutes into the stanza. Then, after Shippensburg responded with a goal of its own, the Huskies scored four consecutive markers to take their first lead of the game, 8-7, with 9:53 left in regulation. Senior Abby Bergman (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) started the string with Dempsey, freshman Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), and sophomore Annie Rollins (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) following as Bloomsburg grabbed a one-goal lead.

However, Shippensburg scored the next three to take a 10-8 lead with 6:48 left before the Huskies answered with three straight on a pair of goals from Roberts - sandwiched around a tally from Dempsey - to take an 11-10 advantage with 2:33 left in regulation.

The Raiders used last-second heroics to send the game to overtime as Gabby Savarino buried a free-position shot with five seconds left in regulation to force the extra session. Then, with just 1:48 left in overtime, Seifried notched her fifth goal of the contest to send Shippensburg to the one-goal victory.

Shippensburg held a 32-27 advantage in shot attempts and won 17 of the 26 draws on the afternoon. Bloomsburg turned the ball over 20 times as compared to Shippensburg's 26 and the ground-ball battle was tied at 25 apiece.

Graduate student goalkeeper Angela DiPasquale (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) turned aside ten shots as she saw her record drop to 6-4 on the season. Ally Weneta earned the victory for the Raiders as she improved to 3-5 on the year after an 11-save performance on Saturday.

Defensively for the Huskies, senior Lana Paulo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) led the way with five ground balls which included the 100th of her collegiate career. Senior Tiffany Diachynsky (Barto, Pa./Boyertown Area) had a team-high four caused turnovers while Paulo chipped in with three. Bergman paced the Huskies with four draw controls on the day.

The Huskies will return to action on Tuesday, April 20, when the host Millersville University in a crucial PSAC Eastern Division contest at Steph Pettit Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
