MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team erased a four-run lead in the first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader against Mansfield to propel the Huskies to a twin bill sweep, Sunday afternoon. Bloomsburg took the first game 6-5 before defeating the Mountaineers 7-2 in the night cap. With the wins, BU improves to 11-15 for the year and 9-15 in conference play while the Mountaineers drop to 2-18 for the season and in conference action.Â
Trailing 5-1 going into the top of the fifth in the opening game, the Huskies offense came alive. With one away. junior
Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) got hit by a pitch and junior
Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) singled up the middle to put two runners on. Senior
Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) flew out to center field for the second out of the inning but the Huskies would not go away quietly. Freshman
Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) singled and brought home Barnes. Starr took third on the hit and Iseminger advanced to second on the throw. With two runners in scoring position, junior
Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) reached on an error by the short stop and Starr was able to come home to cut the lead to 5-3. Redshirt junior
Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) continued the inning as she reached on an infield single and Iseminger came home. Sophomore
Savannah Doney (Trout Run, Pa./North Penn-Liberty), who came into the game in the fourth to take over in the circle for senior
Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area), laced the game-tying single to center as DelPierre came home to score and tie the game at 5-5.Â
Doney pitched herself out of a jam in the bottom of the fifth as there was a runner on third with one out. Doney got Danielle Goff to ground out to second that kept Alex Hein at third. Doney ended the inning with a fly out to center.Â
The Huskies had a quiet of the sixth before Doney pitched herself out of another jam with a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth. This time, Lacey O'Donnell took third on a passed ball with two outs but Doney struck Hannah Swartz out on a 1-2 pitch to keep the game tied.Â
With runners on the corners and one out in the top of the seventh, Wild hit a fly ball to right field, deep enough to bring home junior
Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area), who pinch ran for Iseminger earlier in the inning, for what proved to be the game-winning run. Hoping for a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win, Doney found herself in trouble once again as the first two Mountaineers reached on a pair of infield singles. Senior
Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) helped out her battery mate as she threw out Shannan Sisco on the base paths for the first out. Abbey Woodward reached on another infield single but Goff followed with a ground ball that moved both runners up with the second out. Doney finished off her first career win with a fly ball to left as Bloomsburg held on for the 6-5 victory.Â
Doney came out in relief of Baney in the fourth and went 3.2 innings, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out one in a scoreless outing. Starr led the team with three hits in game one while Ray and Iseminger each had a pair.Â
The Huskies carried that momentum into game two as they jumped on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. With one out and DelPierre on second. Rossi doubled down the left field line and DelPierre crossed home for the 1-0 lead. Freshman
Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy)Â gor her first hit of the day as she singled up the middle and brought around Rossi. The Huskies led 2-0.Â
Wild started game two and held the Mountaineers to just four hits in the first four innings. The Huskies tacked on four more insurance runs in the top of the fourth to push their lead to 6-0. Junior
Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) led off the fourth wth a single to center and Lenner put runners on the corners with a single to right field. Barnes got hit by a pitch to load the bases and chase the Mansfield starter. The new pitcher for MU got Starr to strike out for the first out, but Ray delivered the big hit to break open the game. Ray took the first pitch she saw to right field and cleared the bases with a three-run double. Iseminger moved Ray to third with a ground out and Ray came around on a wild pitch to give Bloomsburg a 6-0 lead.Â
Mansfield managed two hits in the bottom of the fifth as the Mountaineers had runners on the corners with one out. Wild caught a sharply hit line drive back to her for the second out of the inning and closed out another scoreless frame getting Alexis Easling to fly out to left.Â
The Huskies plated their final run of the day in the top of the sixth as Starr took third on a passed ball after reaching on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on Iseminger's fielder's choice later in the frame.Â
The Mountaineers got their first run of the game as they loaded the bases with one out and Lauren Watson scored on a wild pitch. Wild got Madison Morrett to pop out to short stop and caught O'Donnell watching the third strike to end the sixth. MU got one more run back in the seventh with an RBI double from Easling but that would be the last runs Wild gave up as she got a line-out double play to end the game as she caught another come backer and threw out Easling, who was off of the bag at second.Â
Wild earned her sixth win of the season with a 7.0 complete game effort, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out four. DelPierre had three hits in game two while Ray and Lenner each had two.Â
The Huskies return to action on Friday, as they travel to Millersville for an important PSAC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm. The Marauders are currently 17-13 on the year and 11-13 in conference action and are two teams ahead of the Huskies in the conference standings.Â
