Baney Helps Softball To Split At East Stroudsburg Saturday Afternoon

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Senior Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) did a little bit of everything for the Bloomsburg University softball team to lead the Huskies to a doubleheader split with East Stroudsburg, Saturday afternoon. The Huskies dropped the first game, 5-2, before mounting a comeback to defeat the Warriors, 7-5, in the nightcap. The Huskies moved to 6-14 on the year, and in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while the Warriors moved to 13-7 overall and 8-6 in conference action.

Bloomsburg struck first in the opening game with a run in the top of the second and third inning after both teams went quietly in the first. Freshman Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) singled to left-center to lead it off for the Huskies, and senior Briannah Dobson (York, Pa./Central York) worked a 15-pitch walk to put two runners on. Redshirt junior Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) helped herself out a little with a single through the left side that brought home Iseminger to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead.

Wild shut down the Warriors in order in the bottom of the inning with a pair of strikeouts to maintain the early lead. The Huskies added one more in the third as senior Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) homered with two outs over the right-centerfield wall. The home run was Ray's first of the season.

The Warriors broke through in the bottom of the third, however, and didn't look back. East Stroudsburg plated three runs on four hits and one Husky error in the inning, including back-to-back RBI doubles to tie the game and a single coupled with a miscue to take the 3-2 lead.

East Stroudsburg added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth to push its lead to 5-2 after five complete innings. After a quiet sixth for both teams, Wild doubled to center with one out in the top of the seventh but was stranded at second as the Warriors' pitcher, Marah Range, got a pair of groundouts to end the game.

Wild suffered the loss in the circle for Bloomsburg as she went 6.0 innings and allowed five runs, just three earned, on eight hits and a pair of walks. Wild struck out six Warriors on the day. She fell to 4-5 on the year. Range earned the win for East Stroudsburg, going 7.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Range moved to 8-2 on the year.

Wild had two of the Huskies' hits in the first game, while junior Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area), Ray, and Iseminger accounted for the other three hits.

Baney got the ball in game two but fell behind 3-0 as the Warriors plated two runs in the bottom of the first and then added a run in the home half of the third.

But, the senior took matters into her own hands at the plate as she got the Huskies on the board with an RBI single to cut the Huskies' deficit to 3-1. Junior Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led off the inning with a double and then took third on a wild pitch before Baney brought her in with a solid single back up the middle.

Baney kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, and the Bloomsburg offense went back to work in the fifth as it grabbed a 6-3 lead with five runs in the top half of the frame. Starr started the rally as she was hit by a pitch with one out. Two batters later, Ray kept the inning alive with a single to advance Starr to second with two outs. Starr swiped third, and then DelPierre drew a walk to load the bases. Wild reached on an infield single and, coupled with a throwing error, allowed all three runners to cross the plate as the Huskies grabbed a 4-3 lead. Baney then drilled her first home run of the season - a two-run blast to straightaway center - to extend the Bloomsburg lead to 6-3.

The Warriors answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Huskies' lead to 6-5. Bloomsburg answered with a run in the top of the sixth to push the margin to 7-5. Starr led off the inning with a double and then scored on a two-out RBI single from DelPierre.

Baney did the rest as she retired the final six East Stroudsburg batters, in order, to earn the game-two victory.

The senior picked up her second win of the season as she went the distance in the circle, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits. She walked four and struck out six. Baney was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Huskies offensively.

DelPierre went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two runs scored while six others had a single hit in the nightcap.

The two teams will wrap up the four-game series at Jan M. Hutchinson Field on Monday, April 5. First pitch of game one is scheduled to be thrown at 2:30 p.m.
